DETECTIVE series Endeavour, the prequel to Inspector Morse is returning for an eighth series on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at 8pm on ITV1.

The prequel – like the original – is set and filmed in Oxford and will feature some of the city's beautiful historic landmarks and buildings. Let's take a look…

Where is Endeavour filmed?

The Inspector Morse prequel is set and (for the most part) filmed in the city of Oxford.

Filming locations include:

Oxford's Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is actually called Hertford Bridge, and is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane in Oxford, England.

It's referred to as the Bridge of Sighs because of its' similarity to the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice.

It was built in 1913-14 and designed by architect Thomas Graham Jackson.

Bodleian Library

The Bodleian Library – located in Broad Street, Oxford – is the main research library of the University of Oxford and, as one of the oldest libraries in Europe it holds over 12 million books, papers and magazine.

The library is a favourite location for filmmakers, and can also be seen in the opening scene of The Golden Compass, Brideshead Revisited, Another Country, The Madness of King George III, the first two Harry Potter films, The History Boys and the X-Men series.

Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean Museum, also known as the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, was built 335 years ago and is on Beaumont Street, Oxford.

The museum was built to house the cabinet of curiosities that Elias Ashmole gave to the University of Oxford in 1677.

Thee Ashmolean Museum has long been a favourite Morse location – it's central to the first episode of the second series of Inspector Morse, and featured in the first ever episode of Lewis, when Inspector Lewis and Sergeant Hathaway browsed the museum's collection of ancient Greek coins.

White Horse pub

The White Horse has been used as a location by Morse, Lewis and Endeavour.
It's a grade two listed building that date back to the 16th century.
If you're planning to pay them a visit, they serve homemade food and a selection of real ales.
Their address is: 52 Broad St, Oxford OX1 3BB.

Wellington Square

The Endeavour cast and crew were spotted in June 2021 filming in Wellington Square Park.

The square is located in central Oxford and is surrounded by several buildings affiliated with the historic University.

It's not yet clear what role the square will play in series 8 – but make sure to keep an eye out for it!

Can I visit Oxford and the Endeavour set?

Oxford is a popular town for Brits and foreigners alike to visit.

In Febuary 202o a new tour was launched to take fans of the Endeavour around the city to some of the most recognisable filming locations.

The tour includes a visit to various Oxford colleges – a list that changes daily, depending on which ones are open – as well as the main locations of the Endeavour filming set.

Fans additionally get plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the guide.

Group sizes are, for now, limited to 20 people, in accordance with the latest Government measures against coronavirus.

When is Endeavour on ITV and how can I watch it?

The eighth series of the detective drama lands on ITV1 at 8pm on Sunday 12 September 2021.

Series 8 will include three episodes – the first two of which are directed by leading man Shaun Evans – but there's no air date for the final two installments of the series just yet.

It's been rumored that series 8 could be the last for the detective drama.

The Endeavour cast includes Shaun Evans, Roger Allam, Anton Lesser, James Bradshaw, Sean Rigby and Sara Vickers.
