Fred Dinenage has officially announced he’ll be leaving ITV Meridian after almost four decades working as a news anchor for the broadcaster. He’s one of ITV’s longest serving regional news anchors, but has revealed he’ll be stepping down from his role at Christmas. On Tuesday’s instalment of This Morning, Phillip Schofield praised the broadcasting legend for his lengthy career.

Introducing Fred onto the programme, Phillip remarked: “When you leave TV will crumble.”

Fred detailed how much he’ll miss the work, but highlighted his loyal viewers as something he’d miss most.

Looking back on his long career, he said: “Our viewers have just been amazing to me.

“I said on our ITV Meridian programme last night at six o’clock, I thanked our viewers because they’ve shared with me so much incredible love and loyalty for so many years.

“We stop, we chat in the street wherever I am, they tell me their problems as if we’re old friends and indeed we are.

“So, I’m going to miss them terribly,” Fred explained.

More to come…
