A new trailer for the upcoming season of The Walking Dead has traced the epic series all the way back to its humble beginnings in 2010. Alongside powerful words from former lead Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) the new footage of season 11 of AMC’s zombie epic tipped fans off to a major storyline when it was released on Instagram.
Yumiko (played by Eleanor Matsuura) is set to take on a major role in the final entry of the long-running zombie drama, The Walking Dead.
Although the flagship series will soon be coming to an end on AMC, a number of spin-offs and an upcoming film trilogy will continue the story.
Originally based on Robert Kirkman’s series of comic books, the TV adaptation has taken a number of departures from the source material over the years.
Among some of the biggest changes was last year’s departure of Michonne (Danai Gurira) after ten seasons.
In the original comic book run, Michonne remains a major character until the very last issue.
The survivors eventually discover a vast post-apocalyptic community known as the Commonwealth, which will form the basis of TWD season 11.
However, with Michonne no longer around to complete her comic counterpart’s story, it’s speculated that fellow survivor Yumiko will take her place.
Fans quickly spotted the character wearing the signature white uniform of the Commonwealth’s soldiers.
As Michonne in the comics infiltrates the city to find her lost daughter, it’s speculated this storyline will fall to Yumiko in the TV series.
One viewer posted the theory on Twitter when they noticed the revealing clue in the new trailer.
They said: “Wow. Yumiko wearing The Commonwealth uniform looking at the wall of the lost.
“I guess she really is getting Michonne’s comic arc.”

Some viewers have already noted some similarities between the two characters as the TV versions of Michonne and Yumiko diverged from their original paths in the comics.
Others have also pointed out Michonne has already had a number of arcs in the series that didn’t exist in Kirkman’s comics, which could contradict the Commonwealth storyline.
With Michonne not expected to return to the franchise until the upcoming series of films based on Rick Grimes, it’s only natural for her storyline to be passed on to someone else.
Yumiko’s upcoming arc has already been teased by a message in previous trailers, which reveals a character named Tommy is looking for his sister, ‘Miko’.
The new footage now seems to confirm the next season will loosely adapt Michonne’s story, with Yumiko instead looking for her long lost brother.
Another fan noted on Reddit: “The s11 character description says Yumiko uses her experience as a lawyer to outsmart the Commonwealth’s interrogators.
“It sounds like Yumiko goes undercover in the Commonwealth and finds a lot more than she bargains for (this is a switch up of Michonne’s comic book storyline).”
Thankfully, there isn’t too much longer to wait to see Yumiko’s next steps play out as the first of three eight-episode blocks will be hitting screens next month.
The Walking Dead season 11 will premiere on Sunday, August 22 on AMC.
