Season ten of The Walking Dead’s highly anticipated finale has prompted mixed reactions from the show’s patient fans.
Although most of the current instalment wrapped up earlier this year, the outbreak of coronavirus caused severe delays to episode 16’s post-production.
After a lengthy hiatus, A Certain Doom finally hit screens tonight, Sunday October 4.
The special episode saw Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) face off against Beta (Ryan Hurst) and the Whisperers.
Meanwhile, fans were thrilled by the long-awaited return of Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who was accompanied by a mysterious masked man.
The new character, who has his origins in Robert Kirkman’s original comic book series, was encountered by Aaron (Marquand) and Alden (Callan McAuliffe).
One of the series’ most striking presences yet, the mysterious survivor is decked out in a white hooded jacket and an iron mask, and wields dual Japanese kama.
The character was heavily featured in trailers for the finale, but many fans were let down when they removed their mask without revealing their face to the audience.
Demonstrating some impressive combat techniques, the masked character will certainly be a formidable addition to TWD’s next season.
Unfortunately, after fans have endured plenty of ups and downs throughout the post-apocalyptic drama’s recent seasons, the finale’s ‘unreveal’ was the latest in a long line of let downs.
After the episode aired, viewers took to Reddit to discuss what was and wasn’t revealed in the gripping season finale.
While reactions to the episode itself were generally positive, several commenters were outspoken about the finale’s lack of closure.

Redditor trevorpaulrobeson posted: “The thing I’m irritated about is this masked person. Like, what the f**k*.
“You really couldn’t just reveal who it was at the end of the episode? And then the screeners went out – the people who reviewed it said the masked person reveal was ‘hilarious’. Really? What exactly was so funny about it?”
TV reviewers who were given early access to the long-awaited finale of season ten reportedly built up the reveal of the mystery man as a huge moment for season ten.
Subsequently, many excited fans were crushed when they realised their hidden identity will remain a secret until the six bonus episodes set to round out the current season.
Production of most major television projects have been able to restart but, other than a tentative release date of early 2021, it’s still unknown exactly when TWD will return.
Other fans quickly assured the reveal is coming, and speculated the masked character most likely hadn’t been cast at the time of filming.
One viewer replied: “It’s a new character, anyway. We aren’t going to learn anything with a face reveal.
“I figure we’ll learn about the masked person and get some useful details in the 6 extra episodes, some of which will focus on Maggie and what she has been up to.”
Much like Michonne was introduced before Marvel star Danai Gurira had been cast, fans will have to wait and see who’ll be joining Daryl’s team when TWD returns next year.
The Walking Dead season 10 continues in 2021 on AMC.
