The True Story Behind Showtime’s 'Murder in the Bayou' Is Even Scarier Than the Show

For those of you who simply cannot get enough true crime content (hello, yes, it me), you’re in luck, because Showtime is premiering a new docuseries today called “Murder in the Bayou.” It tells the story of eight women (called the “Jeff Davis 8”) who were murdered over a four-year period from 2005-2009 in the rural Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. The five episodes will explore the mystery of the eight related deaths, all of which remain unsolved.

The series is actually based off a book.

The New York Times best-seller, titled, “Murder in the Bayou: Who Killed the Women Known as the Jeff Davis 8?” was written by Ethan Brown. Brown also explores the law enforcement conspiracy theories and works to solve the murder mystery.

Wait, so what happened??

In May of 2005, the first victim, 28-year-old Loretta Chaisson-Lewis, was found dead, her body floating in a canal. One month later, 30-year-old Ernestine Patterson was found five miles south of where Lewis’s body was found. Her throat was slashed, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Two years later, 21-year-old Kristen Lopez was found, her body decomposed and her cause of death unknown. Five more women were then found from 2007 until 2009. And four of the five causes of death have yet to be determined.

To this day, all 8 cases remain unsolved. What happened to the women known as the #JeffDavis8? #MurderInTheBayou premieres Friday at 9/8c on #Showtime. pic.twitter.com/Ae6ksEvmq1

The Jeff Davis 8 had plenty in common.

All the women who were killed were from South Jennings, which was considered the poorer part of town. They all knew each other, and they were all performing sex work of some kind. They were also all criminal informants for the police at one point before they died.

Each woman was also connected to a man named Frankie Richard.

Richard is an alleged drug dealer who was last seen with a few of the victims before they went missing. He also admitted to having sex with some of them.

He was initially investigated for the murder of Lopez, but all charges were eventually dropped. Suspicion still remains, though, especially among some of the women’s loved ones. But Richard maintains his innocence, saying he cared about the women and would never hurt them.

The series also questions the involvement of law enforcement and politicians.

Some people believe these officials to have played a role in the murder of the Jeff Davis 8. In the book about the case written by Ethan Brown, there were allegations that officers had sex with the women who later died. Evidence went missing.
