The Last Kingdom: Netflix tease fourth season of show
The Last Kingdom season five is in the making for Netflix and fans saw more of King Edward’s (played by Timothy Innes) wife Aelflaed (Amelia Clarkson) in the last season. The pair married against Edward’s will and had a son together, who Aelflaed believed was the rightful heir to the throne. But Aelflaed and her father Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) despised Edward’s family, and could be about to pay for their deceit in the upcoming season.
Will Aelflaed be killed in revenge plot?
The fourth season of The Last Kingdom focussed on King Edward’s reign, and he has struggled to come to terms with his new position of power.
He was also under pressure from his wife Aelflaed, as she favoured their son Aelfweard (Marcell Zsolt Halmy) over Edward’s son Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths) from a previous marriage.
Aelflaed and her father Aethelhelm showed resentment towards Edward’s family, most of all his mother, Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth).
Towards the end of season four Aelflaed, Aethelhelm and Aelswith were all held as captives by the Viking Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) when he invaded Winchester.
While Aelswith believed her grandson Aethelstan was the rightful heir to the throne, Aelflaed believed it was her son Aelfweard.

In order to silence Aelswith, Aethelhelm had told his daughter of a plan to poison her, using flowers from the castle grounds.
He warned Aelflaed not to drink the poisoned water but offered some to Aelswith, who became very ill at the end of the season.
Fans have been left wondering whether she survived the assassination attempt and whether Edward will see his wife Aelflaed’s true character.
However, Aethelstan is destined to be King of Wessex so Aelflaed and her father could either be exiled from the kingdom or even killed for what they did.
Edward has never had a good relationship with his wife, so would not have any trouble punishing her if he discovered she had been in on the plan to kill his own mother.
The TV series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, and Aelflaed only appears in two novels – Death of Kings and The Empty Throne.
If the series remains true to the books, Aelflaed’s time on the show is almost over, so she may see her demise in the upcoming season.
Her character is based on the real-life Aelfflaed, who was in fact the second wife of Edward the Elder.
In real life, Aelfflaed’s marriage to Edward must have ended in the late 910s as he went on to marry again.

Edward the Elder’s third wife was Eadgifu, and together they had a son called Edmund. There is a possibility the series could follow the real historical events, which would mean Aelflaed and Edward should split up in the next season.
If Aelswith does survive the poisoning, she will most likely reveal the truth to Edward about who tried to kill her.
Edward may then face another dilemma as he is forced to choose between believing his mother or his wife. He has fallen out with both in the past, and it may be a difficult decision for him.
Fans have started to root for Aelswith’s character as she underwent a complete personality change towards the end of the fourth season.
She helped reunite her grandson Aethelstan with his mother Ecgwynn, which marked the start of her redemptive arc.
This should see Aelflaed become the enemy in the fifth season, and she and Aethelhelm are likely to get their comeuppance.
Actress Clarkson is on Instagram and she shared a photo of herself as Aelflaed, saying she was “honoured” to be a part of the show.
One fan responded: “Hoping your character has more scenes/bigger role next season.”
Her character may have hated Aelswith in the series, but Clarkson and her co-star Butterworth are great friends off-screen.
Clarkson shared a video of the pair celebrating on a boat along the River Danube in Budapest, where the series is filmed.
