Spoilers: Boss warns Peter is 'on the slope to suicide' in Corrie

01/02/2021

The moment Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) in Coronation Street returned to the bottle we all watched with sadness, fully aware what the alcohol would being doing to him.

Of course, Peter drinking again has meant he’s faced with the prospect of his liver failing, meaning one more drink at any time could be enough to kill him.

Aside from Peter’s drinking, he’s also in the middle of a huge relationship breakdown with Carla (Alison King). While Carla is deeply sorry for sleeping with Adam (Sam Robertson), Peter is incredibly hurt by her actions, and is turning to drink to cope with how he feels.

With Peter’s journey set to get worse, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod has recently revealed Peter is ‘on the slope to suicide’:

‘The initial chapter that Peter faces is psychological – he needs to decide if he wants to proceed with treatment. He has so much self loathing and that is a prominent phase of a relapse. Peter will essentially decide on a course that is like a slow suicide which horrifies his family that he entertains a slow slide to the grave.’

Iain continued, adding the lengths actor Chris Gascoyne is prepared to go to while portraying his character:

‘Peter’s addiction will be taken to new depths. Chris goes full method actor and immerses himself in it so we’re talking to doctors and nutritionists to make it as visually realistic and shocking as possible. We had to go right to the end this time as he always been warned what would happen to him if he kept drinking.

It’s hugely emotional – the family and Carla have to convince him that he wants to live.’
