Princess Diana's Bodyguard Saw 'Spencer' and Has Some Thoughts

Anyone seen Kristen Stewart’s new movie Spencer yet? The film is gorgeous and Kristen’s amazing, etc, but it also offers a rare glimpse into Princess Diana’s increasingly isolated (from the royals, at least) life towards the end of her marriage to Prince Charles. Specifically, the movie largely centers around one Christmas holiday at Sandringham.

So, how accurate is the film compared to real life? According to Princess Diana’s bodyguard Ken Wharfe, who joined the family for holidays at Sandringham, Spencer is pretty on point.

“It was purgatory for her,” Ken told People, adding that Diana “confined herself to spending time in the kitchen with the chef or with people like me, in the hope that time would while away, and she could get back to London.”

He also praised Kristen’s performance, saying “Out of all the people who have played Diana over the past 10 years, she’s the closest to her. She managed to perfect her mannerisms.”

That said, the scene where Diana confides in her dresser probably didn’t happen. “From my experience, Diana never once confided in her dressers,” he said.

Meanwhile, royal biographer Ingrid Seward confirmed that Diana “would have put on a good front for the Queen and the family. She was a properly brought-up girl and would have considered it rude to make a scene or a spectacle of herself.”

Diana and Charles obviously ended up separating and divorcing in real life, a super complicated process that took years and ended with a large settlement. More details on that right here:
