Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman) and wife Wendy (Laura Linney) will be back on Netflix this month as Ozark season four drops its first seven episodes on the streaming service. And to add to the anticipation, Netflix has dropped an action-packed trailer showing the money laundering husband and wife duo right in the thick of the action as they continue to escape Omar Navarro’s (Felix Solis) murderous ways and Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) closer to home. However, the promo also sets the stage for Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) to face arguably her biggest test yet.

To recap, heading into season four, Ruth has comprehensively cut ties with the Byrdes for their part in Ben Davis’ (Tom Pelphrey) demise.

The third season ended with Ruth placing her allegiances elsewhere, confiding in local drug queenpin Darlene and her cousin Wyatt Langmore (Charlie Tahan).

And the season four, part one trailer confirms the two camps will be at loggerheads throughout as it opens with a rather tense confrontation inside Marty and Wendy’s casino.

Darlene, Ruth and Wyatt all attend Marty and Wendy’s meeting at the casino where the duo issue a warning that if the Snell matriarch resumes producing heroin, then Omar’s cartel will react with “brutal” force.

Of course, Darlene dismisses this idea and the trailer descends into all-out carnage, with Marty and Wendy trying to evade capture from the FBI as well as a number of deadly scenarios.

FBI agent Maya Miller (Jessica Frances Dukes) also features heavily in the promo as it becomes clear Omar is keen to cut a deal with law enforcement to get himself out of the drug-dealing game.

Inevitably, Omar’s plans look like they’ll be far from plain sailing as explosions, gunshots and brawls ensue throughout the trailer.

However, there is one clue from the teaser which suggests Ruth may seek solace away from both Darlene and Marty, and instead have no choice but to liaise with the FBI.

After all, Ruth has made her stance on the Byrdes clear – she’ll never work with them again for not only their part in Ben’s death but the years of unfair treatment: case in point being the retaliation to Frank Cosgrove Jr’s (Joseph Sikora) attack.

Heading into season four, Ruth appears to have a safe option and close allies nearby in the form of Darlene and her criminal enterprise – but this may not last.

Darlene has been heavily tipped among the Ozark fandom to die in the fourth and final outing and a clip from the trailer shows her coming face to face with cartel hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla).

If this foreshadows Darlene’s demise – a popular theory among viewers – Ruth could be left without a hardened support network around her.

And in one split-second shot in the trailer, Ruth can be seen standing outside her trailer when a series of black cars approach.

The cars in question look incredibly similar to those used by the FBI throughout the series, and they arrive at Ruth’s to find her alone.

If this is Maya and her cohorts arriving at Ruth’s to question the young Langmore about her involvement with Marty, Ruth’s disdain for the Byrdes could lead to her flipping on them.

After all, if Darlene dies and a return to work for the Byrdes is out of the question, Ruth may see no other option but to seek protection from law enforcement.

Of course, this could risk the wrath of the cartel but with Omar himself looking to make a deal, Ruth could see this as her only safe option.

It would also put Marty and Wendy behind bars, something she’d undoubtedly relish seeing.

However, the trailer does its best to conceal any major spoilers from the upcoming season, so the identity of those in the cars is up for debate.

But could this be the biggest clue yet that Ruth will make it out of the final series alive with the force of the FBI protecting her?

Ozark season 4, part 1 premieres on Netflix on January 21, 2022.
