Outlander: How much older is Roger than Brianna in Outlander?

Outlander cast tease details of ‘exciting’ season six

When Roger MacKenzie (played by Richard Rankin) is first introduced to the world of Outlander, Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) was not yet born. Over the seasons, the pair developed a romance but some have been left wondering exactly how much older Roger is. He’s what you need to know about this ahead of the return of Outlander for season six.

How much older is Roger than Brianna in Outlander?

Outlander follows the lives of its two main couples as they navigate life in the past and the present.

One of these pairs is Roger and Brianna who fell in love in the 20th century before travelling to the past.

By season five, the pair are married and have a son together named Jemmy.

However, some fans are still keen to know more about their relationship, including what the difference in age is between them.

When viewers first meet Roger, he is a young boy in the care of Reverend Reginald Wakefield (James Fleet).

He is living at the home where Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) come to stay in 1946.

At this time he is around five or six-years-old but it is never explicitly said.

According to Diana Gabaldon’s novels, he was born in either 1940 or 1941 to Marjorie and Jeremiah MacKenzie.

Then it is only in 1948 when Brianna is born in a much more dramatic set of circumstances.

Claire fell pregnant with Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) baby after she travelled through the stones to the 1700s.

She had been living with Jamie as his wife after falling in love with him and making a new life in the past.

With Culloden on the horizon though, Jamie wanted to make sure Claire and their unborn child were safe.

Therefore, he sent Claire back to her own time and she landed in 1948.

Frank took her back in and Brianna was born on November 23, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts.

This means there is an approximately eight-year age difference between the characters.

This is evidenced when Brianna first meets Roger after she has just graduated from high school and he is an Oxford University professor.

The age difference between them has not played a huge part in their storyline so far.

However, given this was a time of huge social change, the difference between them is noticeable with Brianna being more forward-thinking and Roger being more traditional.

The age difference between the two characters is also reflected outside of the series as well.

However, there is a bit more of a disparity between the two actors Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton.

Skelton was born on March 7, 1994, making her 26-years-old.

On the other hand, Rankin was born on January 4, 1983, making him 38-years-old.

This means there is a 12-year difference between the two, rather than the eight years between their characters.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
