Netflix's new mockumentary Death To 2021 has left viewers in shock after making several jokes about the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.

The TV programme describes itself as a "darkly comedic retrospective" which combines real news footage alongside "scripted talking-head interviews" to look back on the second year in the pandemic.

Starring high-profile celebrities like Hugh Grant and Lucy Liu, the film was made by the creators of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones.

During the first half of the mockumentary, the narrator pokes fun at Prince Philip's death as he says: "After the interview, Prince Philip withdraws from public life permanently, by dying."

He continues: "Millions watched the funeral of his Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke Of Deadingburgh."

Many were left taken aback by the comments made over Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's late husband, who died peacefully on 9 April at the age of 99.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "They are wrong for this one," as a second branded it "rude," followed by the hashtag #deathto2021.

Another said: ""After the interview, Prince Phillip withdraws from the public life permanently….by dying" the delivery was just dark #DeathTo2021".

While a fourth added: "My jaw dropped #DeathTo2021".

Buckingham Palace confirmed the news of Prince Philip's death at the time as they shared a statement, which read: A statement read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

During her annual Christmas Day speech, the Queen paid tribute to her late husband as she marked her first festive celebrations without him.

“His sense of service, intellectual curiosity and capacity to squeeze fun out of any situation – were all irrepressible," she said. “That mischievous, enquiring twinkle was as bright at the end as when I first set eyes on him."

The Queen added: “But life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings – and as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas."
