Neighbours stars who were in Home And Away as actor could consider soap move

08/10/2022

Neighbours fans have been calling out for the soap's stars to join other shows, after the series came to an end last month.

Fans recently asked Dr Karl Kennedy actor Alan Fletcher to join EastEnders – after he was spotted at the bar of the Old Vic on set.

A source also revealed to Woman's Day that Toadie actor Ryan Maloney might consider a role in fellow Australian soap Home And Away, saying: "He's made more than enough during his time playing Toadie, but he loves working, and if a role came up on Home and Away, he'd absolutely consider it."

However, while Ryan Maloney himself has not confirmed whether he would take up a part in Home And Away, or if this is on the cards, he would not be the first Neighbours alumni to appear in the soap.

Here, Daily Star takes a look at the Neighbours stars who also appeared in Home And Away.

Rebekah Elmaloglou

Rebekah Elmaloglou is fondly known to soap fans as Terese Willis – the owner of Lassisters Hotel in Neighbours.

She became a fan favourite after joining the soap in 2013, and went on to marry and then separate from resident villain Paul Robinson, with the couple rekindling their romance in Neighbours' final episode.

However over 23 years before her Neighbours debut, she played teenager Sophie Simpson on Home And Away.

The star appeared on the soap between 1990-1993, with the character later becoming one of the first teenage parents on the show.

She also returned to Summer Bay for a period of time between 2002-2005, before landing her recurring role on Neighbours.

Ahead of the final episode of Neighbours, Rebekah also revealed to Inside Soap that Home And Away star Ray Meagher had reached out to her in a sweet gesture from her former cast friends.

She said: "Ray Meagher called me to see how I was. I hadn't seen him in years but he got my number from my brother who is a crew member on Home and Away.

"He told me how sorry he was and sent his love to everyone on Neighbours and said the gang at Home and Away wanted to show support and were thinking of us. I think they were quite shocked by the news as well."

Terence Donovan

Jason Donovan may have risen to fame on Neighbours in 1986 – but he was closely followed by father Terrance, who joined the soap in 1990 as Doug Willis.

In the same year though, he had made an appearance in Home And Away as Rebekah Elmaloglou's onscreen dad Al Simpson in 1990.

During his time in Summer Bay, he attempted to frame Donald Fisher for a murder he had committed, before leaving Home And Away in the same year to join Neighbours.

His Neighbours stint was much longer than son Jason's, as he played Doug for 26 years until 2016 and even starred in the 2015 spin-off series Neighbours: Hey Piper.

Terence's character later died outside Lassiter's Hotel, and the actor admitted he wasn't happy about the way his exit was written.

Speaking at the time, he said: "Look, it's not the way I'd have liked to do it from the point of view of coming out of the series.

"But, the producers did it a different way and it's their story and their show."

Guy Pearce

Neighbours heartthrob Guy Pearce famously got his TV break playing Mike Young between 1986 to 1989 – before going on to be the Hollywood star we all know today.

However, he also had a six-week stint on Home And Away as David Croft, the love interest of Rebekah Elmaloglou's Sophie in 1991.

The on-screen couple had a romantic fling, which later led to Sophie becoming pregnant, but David died in a car crash before he got a chance to see his daughter Tamara being born.

He later starred in hit Hollywood films including L.A Confidential, Mary Queen Of Scots and Iron Man 3, but Guy made a return to Neighbours for its final episodes last month.

Speaking ahead of his appearance, he said: "I’m an incredibly nostalgic person anyway so I’ve always wanted step back onto the show at some stage and of course with the sad news that the show is finishing, it seemed like the appropriate time."

He added: "Of course, there have been other moments when I’ve auditioned for roles and got them, but I can’t ever forget this.

"I always feel super lucky to have got on the show when I did and as we know, it just took off and became huge."

Ashleigh Brewer

Ashleigh Brewer was an unexpected arrival in Erinsborough, after she appeared as long lost child Kate Ramsay in Neighbours.

The eldest of her siblings, Kate fell in love with detective Mark Brennan, but she was left devestated after he was presumed dead.

However, Mark made a shock return and it seemed that Kate had found her happy ever after – but it was not meant to be.

Moments after Mark proposed to Kate, she was brutally killed by one of her father's rivals in a shooting, in revenge for being wronged by Paul Robinson in the past.

Four years after her Neighbours departure, Ashleigh arrived on Home And Away as police detective Chelsea Campbell in 2018.

She later fell in love with Colby Thorne, but like her Neighbours counterpart, it was not meant to be after new husband confessed to the murder of his father – with Chelsea leaving Summer Bay for good.

Before her Home And Away stint, Ashleigh also revealed to Now To Love that she is close friends with her former Neighbours co-star Margot Robbie, saying: "She's been my number-one supporter from the beginning. I respect her opinions and advice wholeheartedly.

"Having her there to lean on is so encouraging."

Harley Bonner

Another Willis family member to arrive on Ramsay Street was Josh, played by Harley Bonner between 2013 to 2016.

He wasn't the first Bonner to appear on the soap though, as his mum is none other than Neighbours icon herself Carla Bonner, who played Steph Scully.

However, his time on the soap came to a dramatic end after he was killed off in a hotel explosion.

Five years later though, Harley popped up in Summer Bay as Logan Bennett in 2021.

He played trauma surgeon Logan for over one year, where his character became a love interest for Mackenzie Booth.

However, fans were shocked when the actor departed the soap in 2022, with Harley saying on his Instagram page: "Thanks and love to you all," adding: "I'm very happy. Life's good. Keep spreading kindness."
