Mirzapur: Amazon Prime release season two trailer

Indian gangster series Mirzapur saw an explosion of success in 2020 after season two dropped and a huge swathe of people watched the show. Mirzapur became Amazon Prime Video’s biggest series in India following the arrival of the new series. Some people went back and watched the show from scratch with some people having questions about the plot.

Why did Munna kill Sweety Gupta if he loved her?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Mirzapur season 1

Trigger-happy college student Munna Tripathi (played by Diyenndu) unleashed his rage on Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) in the season one finale.

Munna and his goons turned up unannounced at a wedding and proceeded to gun everyone down after getting the go-ahead from his mob boss father Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi).

The gangster spared no one with Bablu Pandit (Vikrant Massey) meeting his maker after Munna brutally toyed with him before pulling the trigger.

He also murdered Sweety Gupta (Shriya Pilgaonkar) in cold blood as she begged for her life and revealed she was pregnant.

Sweety’s words failed to move Munna who shot her in the stomach before he killed her.

The manner of her death was entirely tragic and Munna made the split-second decision to end her life without so much as a flicker of emotion.

However, his actions came in stark contrast to his behaviour earlier on in the series when he was pursuing her romantically.

He even tried to force Sweety to see him when she started to show interest in his rival Guddu.

Sweety chose to be with Guddu and it was clearly a point of contention for Munna, who was used to getting this own way in life.

From the looks of it, Munna’s behaviour was driven by a deep-rooted jealousy after Sweety rejected him.

Additionally, he was jealous of Guddu and Bablu who had managed to win his father’s approval in a short space of time with their work selling guns.

Munna had spent his whole life trying to be accepted by his father as a viable heir to Mirzapur but had never really managed to command Kaleen Bhaiya’s respect or admiration.

Killing Sweety was a means of taking away everything from Guddu – both his wife and child.

Munna’s jealousy and lust for revenge appeared to be greater than any love or affection he might once have had for Sweety.

Actress Pilgaonkar has previously spoken about the effect the show has had on her career, telling The Indian Express last year: “It’s always going to be a combination of talent, luck and opportunity.

“It was the success of Mirzapur in 2018 that changed the momentum of my career.”

After season two dropped late last year, she also posted a poignant message to her Instagram followers about being part of Mirzapur.

Along with a collage of images of Sweety, she told her 58,000 fans: “I just have to say this. There is no bigger reward for an actor than to be known & loved for the characters they portray on screen.

“Sweety Gupta has given me more than I could have ever imagined. I’m overwhelmed by how many ‘miss you‘ messages I’ve received ever since Mirzapur S2 was announced.

“Your suggestions of resurrecting Sweety are incredibly creative & amusing but I take it all as a sign of your love.”

She continued: “I loved playing Swarangini , a girl who not only stood up for herself but for those around her and was always unafraid to speak her mind.

“The credit goes to our brilliant writers Puneet Krishna & Vineet Krishna.

“This character and the show means a lot to me and I’m grateful for all that has come my way after the show released. While there is no scope of a poonarjanma [reincarnation] as some of you have suggested , I just want to say THANK YOU for all your love and messages.”
