Matt Damon to Star in ‘Stillwater’ From Director Tom McCarthy07/19/2019
Two Oscar winners are teaming up. Matt Damon is set to star in Participant Media’s upcoming film “Stillwater,” which will be directed by Tom McCarthy, Variety reports.
The film has “a wonderful script, centered on universal themes of connection and the search for the truth,” according to Participant CEO David Linde. It centers on an oil-rig rough neck from Oklahoma (Damon), who goes to France after his estranged daughter is imprisoned there for murder. She claims she’s innocent, and he sets out to exonerate her. His mission leads him to meet a local woman and her daughter, and takes him on a personal journey.
McCarthy penned the script with Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré. He previously won an Academy Award alongside Josh Singer for their “Spotlight” screenplay. Some of the other films McCarthy has worked as a writer and/or director on include “Up” and “Win Win.”
Damon won his Oscar for co-writing “Good Will Hunting” with Ben Affleck. He’s also been nominated as an actor and producer. Most recently, the actor starred in “Suburbicon” and “Downsizing,” and he’ll been seen in the upcoming “Ford v Ferrari.”
“Stillwater” will be produced and financed by Participant via Amblin Partners. Also producing are Anonymous Content, McCarthy Liza Chasin, Jonathan King, and the late Steve Golin. Executive producers are Jeff Skoll, Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda.
