Marvel's The Eternals cast and release date as details are revealed at Comic Con

One of the highlights of San Diego Comic-Con this year has been Marvel unveiling its plans for its post-Avengers universe.

And among those set to cause great excitement among Marvel fans is the big-screen adaptation of The Eternals, which unveiled its cast and release date at the convention.

It also sees Angelina Jolie making her debut in the MCU – and she’s pretty excited about it if her appearance at Comic-Con is anything to go by.

Here’s what you need to know about The Eternals in the wake of the announcement.

What is Marvel’s The Eternals?

In this post-Avengers world we need another big Marvel franchise to keep us sweet, and it seems that The Eternals could be what we’re after.

The Eternals are a fictional species of humanity who first appeared in comic book form in 1976, courtesy of writer and artist Jack Kirby.

They are a bunch of super-powered near immortal beings created by a series of genetic experiments on early humans by a bunch of cosmic gods known as the Celestials.

The characters protect the human race from the Deviants, an alternate race created by the experiments who are both unstable and grotesque to look at.

Both sides have been locked in a never-ending war since their creation – although given the Eternals have achieved near immortality they are pretty hard to kill.

They are also blessed with super-powers including superhuman strength, the ability to fly, read minds, generate illusions and teleport.

Who is in the cast of Marvel’s The Eternals?

Here’s how the cast is looking so far…

  • Richard Madden will play Ikaris
  • Angelina Jolie will play Thena

  • Salma Hayek will play Ajak

  • Brian Tyree Henry will play Phastos

Speaking at Comic-Con Angelina said of her role:

‘I’m so excited to be here! I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, what it means to be in this family.

‘We’ve all read the script and we know what the task is and so we are going to work very, very hard.’

When is Marvel’s The Eternals released?
