Love Island 2019: Are the Love Island cast allowed to smoke in the villa?
07/16/2019Whether contestants on Love Island are allowed to smoke or not has become a burning question for a number of viewers watching the series for the first time this year. Love Island fans from series one through three will remember a number of iconic arguments, romances and fallouts all stemming from the villa’s smoking area, but in recent years, ITV hasn’t included one in the famous villa. So why do viewers never see contestants smoking cigarettes on Love Island?
Are the Love Island cast allowed to smoke in the villa?
Love Island contestants are allowed to smoke during their time on the show but not in the villa or garden.
An ITV spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “There will be no smoking within the Love Island villa or the villa garden this year.
“Producers have provided a designated smoking area outside the villa where Islanders will be able to have a cigarette if they chose to.”
The smoking ban was first introduced ahead of the 2018 series following complaints made from the previous year.
WHERE IS THE LOVE ISLAND 2019 VILLA?
While it’s not known exactly which of the Love Island 2019 cast smoke, a handful of contestants have shared snaps on their social media pages which appears to suggest they do.
Anna Vakili shared a number of pictures on her Instagram page before heading into the villa enjoying cigars and shishas.
The 28-year-old hasn’t mentioned it on the ITV2 series though.
Joe Garratt is also pictured on his Instagram page with a cigarette in one snap.
Similarly to Anna, the 22-year-old hasn’t discussed smoking, although that could be down to the fact he’s spent most of his time on the show talking about Lucie Donlan.
HOW ARE LOVE ISLAND’S TOMMY FURY AND TYSON FURY RELATED?
The cast of 2018 was similarly given a designated smoking area away from the cameras where they could smoke.
ITV implemented the same rules this year meaning none of the Islanders will be shown with a cigarette in their hand.
Only one contestant at a time is permitted to use the smoking area to avoid any TV-worthy material happening off camera.
In 2017, the likes of Amber Davies, Olivia Attwood and Kem Cetinay were regularly shown in conversation in the smoking area.
The move on ITV’s behalf is to avoid glamorising social smoking and the health risks it causes.
HOW MANY WEEKS IS LOVE ISLAND 2019 ON FOR?
NHS Yorkshire has publicly spoken out in support of ITV’s smoking ban.
Taking to its official Twitter page before the 2019 series began, NHS Yorkshire Smokefree tweeted: “#LoveIsland starts on Monday night & it’s great to hear that the #smoking ban will still be in place!’
However, not all fans were pleased the smoking area wouldn’t be reintroduced.
One Love Island fan wrote on Twitter: “Love Island ain’t been the same since they banned the smoking scenes at the smoking area.
“That used to be the HOT SPOT for drama,” the ITV2 viewer said.
Love Island 2019 continues on weeknights and Sundays at 9pm on ITV2.
