Back in the 21st season of Law and Order: SVU, Deputy Chief Christian Garland (played by Demore Barnes) and Officer Kat Tamin (Jamie Gray Hyder) entered the fray on the NBC drama for the very first time. However, just two seasons later – and one season after the pair were bumped up to series regulars – the much-loved duo will depart from the show. And the new season will waste no time addressing the departures as it’s been reported both farewells will come to fruition in the season 23 premiere.

According to Deadline, sources have said Garland and Tamin will be announcing their goodbyes in the two-hour season 23 opener.

How exactly the pair will depart remains under wraps but the premiere will pick up just hours after the 22nd season’s finale.

And in the opener, And the Empire Strikes Back, the NBC synopsis puts Barnes’ Hyland centre stage as he’ll find his friendship with Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and their loyalties put to the test.

Ben Rappaport, Terry Serpico and Octavio Pisano guest star in the premiere and it will quickly be followed up by episode two, Never Turn Your Back on Them.

The second instalment will throw Kat into the thick of the action as the synopsis teases she and Fin (Ice-T) will land themselves in danger during a search for a witness.

Benson and Garland sound like they’ll also be at the forefront of the story as they struggle with orders from Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) to gain a conviction for a suspect.

With so much going on in the double-bill premiere, the pair’s decision to depart will only add to the already fast-paced drama.

Neither Barnes nor Hyder has spoken out since news of their exits broke – but it’s safe to say Law and Order: SVU fans aren’t best pleased.

“Kat was the only female cop on the show besides Olivia that I liked. So disappointed,” one fan vented on Twitter.

“The squad is short-staffed as it is and now Kat is leaving?” a second questioned. “She didn’t even get the chance to get promoted to detective and they just got here. I certainly didn’t see it coming for these two, they seemed like they were having fun on and off camera. Such a shame.”

A third added: “Oh no. I was starting to like Kat as a character in the show. It’s sad that characters come and go so quickly now.”

While a fourth commented: “Damnit. I was hoping it was fake news. [cry emoji] I really liked Demore.”

And a fifth summed up: “Omg this really sucks I was so warming up to both of them in a major way.” (Sic)

While Barnes may not have issued a public statement on his exit, he did recently take to Instagram to share a behind the scenes picture from filming.

Taken from behind Hargitay in character as Benson, she can be seen peering over the balcony of a building while camera and lighting equipment is positioned around her.

“Romeo Romeo, wherefore art thou?” Barnes captioned the updated, followed up with: ”#SVU #SVU23 @nbclawandorder.”

Fans can catch all the action from season 23 of Law and Order: SVU when it premieres later this month.

The two-hour special is penned to launch the new series on Thursday, September 23 on NBC in the USA.

And right after, spin-off Law and Order: Organized Crime season two will premiere on the same channel.

Law and Order: SVU season 23 premieres on September 23 on NBC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
