WARNING: SPOILERS FOR JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 AHEAD. It’s been a four-year wait, but John Wick: Chapter 4 has finally arrived in cinemas. After almost three hours of relentless action thrills, fans weren’t prepared for that jaw-dropping ending.
John Wick is dead. Well, at least he appears to be. After defeating Marquis Vincent de Gramont in their Parisian duel, Keanu Reeves’ assassin was dying from his wounds as he gasped his late wife’s name, “Helen”. The scene then cut to his grave next to hers, as the Bowery King and Winston looked on. However, we never saw him actually die, or a body, so the ending is definitely an ambiguous one.
For now, both the titular star and his director of four movies Chad Stahelski are done, but are certainly open to John Wick: Chapter 5 in which presumably the hitman man would be “resurrected”. Yet even before that, we’ve not seen the end of Reeves as John Wick as he’s already wrapped the next movie in the hit action franchise.
The fifth movie in the John Wick film franchise is a spin-off prequel called Ballerina, which takes place during the six-month gap in-between John Wick Chapter 3 and 4. The action flick stars Ana de Armas as Rooney, the ballerina turned revenge assassin previously portrayed by Unity Phelan in Chapter 3.
Joining her in the cast reprising their roles are Ian McShane’s Winston, Anjelica Huston’s The Director, but also two characters who are presumed dead from Chapter 4. One of them is Reeves’ Wick and even the late Lance Reddick’s Charon. The latter actor died suddenly last week while promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 and although his character was killed at the start of the new movie, he completed filming his part in the spin-off prequel too.
Ballerina, which follows Rooney hunting the murderers of her family, began filming in November last year and has been in postproduction since February 2023. A release date is yet to be announced, although we’d guess it’ll arrive around a year from now. It’s also unclear if Reeves has a big part in the film or is just making a cameo as Wick.
Underworld franchise and Die Hard 4 director Len Wiseman is helming the spin-off, which was written by John Wick Chapter 3 and 4 scribe Shay Hatten. He was joined on screenwriting duties by Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell, who wrote and directed the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman. Her contribution to the script was requested by Armas herself.
