Current Strictly Come Dancing contestant John Whaite joined Steph McGovern on her Channel 4 chat show Steph’s Packed Lunch on Monday afternoon. John was also joined by professional dance partner Johannes Radebe to speak about their current experience on the BBC dance competition. Whilst cooking in the kitchen for Johannes, Steph and guest Denise Van Outen, John admitted he has been having talks about him possibly making a career change and performing in the West End.

Sat around in the kitchen, Steph asked John: “What’s all this about you potentially going into the West End?”

Laughing at her shock, John replied: “Well, there’s been a few talks, I can’t say much, but there are a few people who are interested in booking me currently.”

Denise’s interest was piqued as she exclaimed: “Are they! Musicals? Which shows, I need to know!” to which John replied: “I’ll tell you later.”

With Steph wanting to know, she joked: “And I’ll tell you tomorrow everyone,” to which John immediately replied: “Don’t tell her, she can’t hold her own water this one.”

Agreeing, Steph said: “I cannot hold a secret in, don’t tell me,” as John continued: “But now there’s murmurings with my agents and stuff, and it’s something I would love to do.”

“You would be amazing, you would love it as well,” Denise praised, as Steph asked: “Don’t you have to be able to sing, though? Can you sing?”

John replied modestly: “I can sing yeah, I can hold a tune,” however, Johannes interrupted and confirmed: “Oh, he can sing!”

Laughing at him, John once again modestly replied: “I can hold a tune, I’m not a great singer, I couldn’t have a leading role, but I could hold a tune after a few beers.”

The pair also appeared on the show to discuss their Strictly journey, and Johannes commented: “There’s lots of pressure, which we’ve decided to just let go because it’s time to really enjoy this process.”

Steph asked John how he felt about the criticism he received from the judges on Saturday, to which he replied: “We were expecting that.

“That is my biggest hang-up, even though I’m a bit of a show-off and like to have a laugh with everybody, I still have those demons inside saying, ‘you’re too camp, you’re too gay’.

“That’s what comes into my head just before I go on stage, don’t be too camp, don’t be too gay, we’ve decided we’re just going to be who we are.”

Johannes added: “I think we’ve broken the stigma, we’ve gotten over the barriers, now it’s time to go for gold, no more holding back.”

Saturday night saw musicals week, and John and Johannes performed the Viennese Waltz to Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Poppins.

After performing their dance, they awaited their scores from the judges, with all four awarding their performance an eight, giving them a total of 32 out of a possible 40.

As the remaining contestants danced and received their scores, John and Johannes landed themselves third from the bottom of the leaderboard.

Speaking on their performance, John said: “I’m shaking all over the place, even me booms shaking!

“No, it’s amazing, what a feeling! It’s [Viennese Waltz] very spinny and very footy, and it’s all the things I’m not.

“I’m not a spinny and footy kind of guy, but I enjoyed it, I came to love it in the end because this one always makes everything fun.”

Unfortunately, it was Tom Fletcher and partner Amy Dowden who were eliminated from the competition after they danced against Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu.

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays from 12:30pm on Channel 4.
