EASTENDERS star Rita Simons has opened up about the heartbreak and series of breakdowns she suffered after her marriage split.

The actress, who played Roxy Mitchell in the BBC soap, and her husband Theo Silverston quietly called time on their marriage in 2020 after 14 years together.

The TV star reflected on the breakdown of her marriage as she discussed her appearance on BBC Two's Pilgrimage.

Rita is joined by Geordie star Vicky Pattison, Boyzone singer Shane Lynch, mathematican Bobby Seagull, comedian Nabil Abdulrashid, Paralympian Millie Knight and comedy legend Su Pollard.

The Jewish actress spoke about the difficulties following her split and admitted to having a "rough few years".

Rita said: "My answer is a weird one because it's no secret that I have been through a rough few years.

"Divorce, blah blah blah, a couple of breakdowns, so by the time I did this show I was in the most wonderful place outside of work that I have been in years," she continued.

"When I said it on the show, I don't know if it was that or I am just getting older, but this is the first show I have ever done where I didn't go, 'I want to go home, I want to see my kids.'"

"I am sure I attribute that to not having a nervous breakdown and a divorce," she told different publications.

The pair, who have twin daughters, were living separate lives since 2018, the Star reports.

Theo moved out of the family home, near EastEnders' famous set in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

Following the split, the performer was said to be keen to sell the place so she can make a fresh start.

Her agent told the paper: "Rita and Theo have been separated for almost two years and Theo moved out of the family home some time ago.

Rita became a star after joining EastEnders as Roxy in 2007, going on to play the feisty Mitchell sister alongside Samantha Womack's Ronnie for ten years.

The pair became firm favourites both both left in 2017 when they were killed off.
