Hollyoaks: Who is Charlie's dad Justin Burton as he dies?

There’s tragic news for troubled teen Charlie Dean (Charlie Behan) in Hollyoaks this week as he attempts to go in search of his dad Justin Burton (Chris Fountain).

He makes the decision after being reinstated in school, which he’s not exactly overjoyed about, and having a row with adoptive dad Darren which leaves him concerned he has lost him forever.

But when he searches for Justin on social media, he makes the awful discovery that he is dead – with the news leaving Charlie devastated.

Justin hadn’t been seen in Hollyoaks since 2009 – although some of his episodes were revisited when the soap repeated a string of classic episodes during the 2020 lockdowns – but just who was he?

Who was Charlie’s dad Justin Burton in Hollyoaks?

Justin Burton arrived in the soap in 2003 with his mother Liz, twin sisters Mel and Sophie, Liz’s partner Richard Taylor and his children Darlene and Ali.

He was a troubled character from the off, initially clashing with Richard and later getting into drugs after learning that his father Michael had taken his own life, leaving him heartbroken.

He was sent to boot camp after pushing Darlene through a window, as well as behaving badly at school, and tried to mend his ways when he returned, but he was later led astray by his drug dealer Macki (Paul Holowaty), sparking off a chain of events which led to him being framed for his murder, even though Ali committed the crime.

One of his main storylines however revolved around his affair with married teacher Becca Dean (Ali Bastian) – who was Charlie’s mother.

She became pregnant in 2006 but was unsure if the father was Charlie or her husband Jake (Kevin Sacre). Things turned sour with Justin and she tried to end it – resulting in Justin taking revenge by reporting her to the police for having a relationship with a minor, resulting in her being jailed for two years.

Becca later gave birth to Charlie in prison and later died after she was stabbed by her cellmate Fran Hathaway.

Justin later went to work for Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), and became involved with his boss Clare Cunningham (Gemma Bissix) as well as sister Katy Fox (Hannah Tointon)

Things then got even more complicated when Warren ordered Justin to kill Clare – resulting in him pushing her over the balcony of The Loft – before fleeing with Katy.

They later returned as Warren faced charges over the attack on Clare – but when Justin revealed he had done it she attempted to get revenge on him, kidnapping Katy and sparking off a furious car chase which led to her driving her car into a quarry, apparently drowning, while Justin saved Katy’s life.

He was last seen after learning that he was Charlie’s dad, after the youngster was diagnosed with leukemia, and Jake proved not to be a match for a bone marrow transplant.

Hollyoaks airs on E4 at 7pm on weeknights with the episode repeated on Channel 4 the following day at 6.30pm.
