Since ABC’s medical drama first aired in 2005 it gained millions of fans across the world and has remained a huge hit for the network. With season 18 fast approaching, Meredith Grey star made a surprise confession about leaving Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s Anatomy followed Meredith Grey’s (played by Ellen Pompeo) medical career from when she first started as a surgical intern.

With a whopping 18 season’s in the bag, the actress made a surprising revelation about her future on the series.

With the knowledge of fans predicting the medical drama could soon be coming to a close, she confessed: “They’re not far off.”

In the interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ellen disclosed: “I mean, I’ve been trying to get away for years.”

Throughout the series, her character has suffered a ton of near-fatal moments, which left fans speculating if this season could be her last.

“I have been trying. It’s not because I haven’t been trying,” she continued.

The episode titled Some Kind of Miracle saw Meredith come face to face with her deceased mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) in the afterlife after she had drowned at Elliot Bay.

While many fans thought that episode would see the last of her, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr) were able to resuscitate Meredith.

Ellen shared: “I have strong relationships at the network and they have been very, very good to me, and have incentivised me to stay.”

“Miraculously, we keep coming up with ways to have a reason to stay and if there’s a reason, that warrants it,” she continued.

In the season finale, Meredith became a patient at the hospital after contracting Covid, while her body was comatose, she reunited with loved ones – some of whom had already passed.

Including her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and her sister Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh).

While season 18 could potentially see Meredith leave Grey’s Anatomy once and for all, fans can look forward to the return of two original cast members.

Kate Walsh will be reprising her role as Addison Montgomery, while new flashback scenes will allow Ellis to posthumously return to the series.

Ellen also opened up about Kate’s return and expressed: “Kate [Walsh] is amazing.”

The actress added: “That’s one of my favourite things about the show right now is having original cast members come back.”

Fans saw a sneak peek of Ellis in the recent trailer where she tells her daughter: “You’ve survived the unthinkable, what are you gonna do, Meredith?”

The healthcare professional is set to make a full recovery after contracting Covid and settle back into work in the upcoming instalment.

With season 18 fast approaching, Grey’s Anatomy is the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history.
