Games of Thrones remains one of the biggest and most popular TV series of all time. However, the infamous finale has cast a shadow over the HBO show, with fans divided over the conclusion of the fantasy epic. Tyrion Lannister star Peter Dinklage has finally weighed in on the debate, dismissing fan anger.

Game of Thrones became the show to watch with its high-stakes political intrigue and genre-defining action setpieces.

It quickly became one of the most-watched series of all time, with the buildup to the final season at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Naturally, the conclusion was never going to satisfy everyone, but the backlash the finale received was unprecedented.

Despite the show ending over two years ago, it is still heavily debated today, with fans’ anger regularly being felt online.

However, Tyrion Lannister was a fan-favourite from start to finish of the series, with Peter Dinklage’s performance being a highlight of the show.

Now Dinklage has offered his opinion on the finale’s reception, rejecting fans’ objections in the process.

Speaking to the New York Times, Dinklage said: “I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them.

“We were going off the air and they didn’t know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that.”

Dinklage then highlighted the fact the series was just a piece of fiction, adding that it was always a show that “subverts” expectations.

“They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it’s fiction,” Dinklage continued, adding: “There’s dragons in it. Move on.

“The show subverts what you think, and that’s what I love about it. Yeah, it was called Game of Thrones, but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, ‘Who’s going to be on the throne?’

“I don’t know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that.”

While the finale certainly had its detractors, the show remains one of the most popular series of all time.

It also shows no signs of slowing down, with HBO well on its way to completing work on the prequel series House of the Dragon.

A release date for the prequel hasn’t been confirmed, though it is expected to premiere at some point in 2022.

As for Dinklage’s own views on the Game of Thrones finale, the star, described it as “brilliant”.

Dinklage explained: “Because it sort of just killed that whole conversation, which is really irreverent and kind of brilliant on behalf of the show’s creators: ‘Shut up, it’s not about that.’

“They constantly did that, where you thought one thing and they delivered another.

“Eerybody had their own stories going on while watching that show, but nobody’s was as good as what the show delivered, I think.”

Game of Thrones is available to watch on HBO Max in the USA and NOW in the UK.
