Eurovision star Sonia unrecognisable 30 years on

Sonia: Why Liverpool ticks all Eurovision boxes

As one of the most popular pop stars of the late 80s and early 90s her voice is still instantly recognisable.

She also secured her place in Eurovision history when she represented the UK in the contest in 1993 with her track Better the Devil You Know.

However, she is looking very different these days – although admittedly amazing for her 51 years.

Liverpool native Sonia has been keeping her Instagram followers up to date on the build-up as she prepares to take to the stage in this year’s competition along with other former UK Eurovision legends.

Last week she posted a picture backstage at the M&S Bank Arena as she waited her first costume fitting and her fresh-faced look belied her years.

She has eschewed her trademark big curly hair of the 80s in favour of a slick ponytail.

Also gone are the casual denims she favoured back in the day, replaced by a sleek and sophisticated dress.

She has also slimmed down considerably from her heyday and is looking incredibly slender.

The singer has championed Liverpool as host city for the Eurovision from the off.

There were seven possible locations in the running – Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.

Last year, she appeared on BBC Breakfast arguing for it to host saying: “I’m absolutely over the moon, it’s going to be fab.

“We tick all the boxes don’t we? You’ve got to come and see our beautiful, beautiful city.

“We’ve got the arena. We’ve got all the criteria – the atmosphere, the buzz. It’ll be one big massive party, it would be absolutely brilliant.”

As well as making an appearance in the contest this year, the star is set to make a cameo in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks who will be marking Eurovision with a special episode.

She will perform her Eurovision track in the special, which has already been recorded.

Sonia was already a household name before she represented the UK in Eurovision.

She shot to the top of the charts with her debut single You’ll Never Stop Me From Lovin’ You.

She followed that up with songs such as Can’t Forget You and Listen To Your Heart and became the first female UK artist to achieve five top 20 hit singles from one album.

She came second in Eurovision losing out to Ireland’s Niamh Kavanagh with In Your Eyes.

The Eurovision Song Contest is on BBC one on Saturday 13th May.
