Emmerdale’s Liam Cavanagh (played by Johnny McPherson) lost his daughter, Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) last week, and understandably he is struggling. In recent scenes, the doctor has been lashing out, reaching for the bottle and pushing those closest to him away. Tonight, Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) was banished to her exes to stay the night but if Liam needs someone to lean on, could Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) find herself in the picture? Before Liam married Leyla, Bernice was adamant she belonged with the handsome doctor, and with Liam picking apart his new wife’s flaws, perhaps he could find consolation in Bernice’s comforting ways.
“Where have you been? You’ve been gone most the day,” Leyla asked when she returned home and Liam explained: “I was with Leanna, at the chapel.”
“On your own?” Leyla continued and he said: “I’m big boy, Leyla.”
“I know, but you told me you needed some space,” she continued and he replied: “Yes because I wanted to be on my own.”
Those watching at home saw Leyla offer: “Why don’t we take a seat?” But Liam demanded to know why and she added: “I don’t know Liam, that’s just what couple’s do don’t they, they get comfy then they have a private chat.”
“Do you really think I’m in the mood to get comfy?” The doctor shouted back.
Realising her wrong choice of words, Leyla said: “I’m sorry I didn’t mean that, I just wanted to have a chat with you about what happened earlier.”
“I’m tired, I think you should go and stay at David’s this evening,” Liam demanded but Leyla argued: “I don’t want to go and stay at David’s!”
“I don’t care what you want,” the grieving father replied and Leyla said: “I am your wife! I should be here with you.”
“This is exactly why I don’t want you here!” Liam exclaimed through tears. “You never listen or think about you actions – like giving Leanna those high heels! She wasn’t used to them, she stumbled and fell off that bridge because of you.”
“Are you saying…are you saying I killed her?” Leyla muttered and Liam said it was a possibility.
But Leyla defended herself which led to Liam storming out: “Ok, yes, maybe the heels were too high, and maybe the road was uneven and maybe she had too much to drink.
“There are so many what if’s Liam that you’re going to drive yourself mad thinking about that. None of it is going to change the fact Leanna is gone.”
It was Bernice who found Leanna lying dead on the rock bed near the bridge.
She had been on a run when Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) called her and asked whether she would come along to her routine pregnancy scan.
Stopping to answer the call and catch her breath, Bernice agreed and then ended the call before looking over the bridge and spotting a very still Leanna below.
Understandably, Bernice was shaken by what she came across, and there is no doubt Liam will want to speak to his ex about how she found Leanna.
Could viewers see the pair grow close and comfort one another during this terrible time?
After all, grief affects people in a variety of ways.
And many fans think this could happen too, taking to Twitter, one wrote: “When the truth comes out could Liam actually end up blaming Leyla? Falling back into Bernice’s arms? After all if not for the shoes & spraining her poor ankle Leanna might of stood a fighting chance. Why didn’t she just take them off & run? Or at least scream? #Emmerdale.”
Another suggested: “Tell me they didn’t kill Leanna off just so they can have Liam cheat on Leila and force him back with Bernice? #emmerdale.”
“I really hope this storyline doesn’t lead to Liam falling back in love with Bernice!!!! #Emmerdale,” someone else commented.
A fourth chimed: “I’m thinking Leanna dying will bring Bernice and Liam closer #Emmerdale.”
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
