Emmerdales Chloe actress on her close bond with brilliant co-star Laura Norton11/30/2021
We know and love (or sometimes love to hate) their characters on screen, but now it’s time to discover all the behind-the-scenes secrets from our favourite soap stars.
In OK!'s exclusive interview, Soap Stars Coming Clean, we're finding out all the juicy gossip about what happens when the cameras stop rolling, as well as the actors’ favourite memories with their co-stars so far.
We recently caught up with Emmerdale actress Jessie Elland, who has joined the ITV soap as mysterious newcomer Chloe Harris. Here, she opens up about her close bond with co-star Laura Norton, who plays Kerry Wyatt, how she has bonded with her new castmates and which celebrity she'd love to see make a cameo in The Woolpack.
What’s your favourite memory on the show so far?
This answer changes all the time because I'm just enjoying everything so much. But the runaway scenes [with Noah Dingle] were really fun, that was great fun. We were filming it on location, so the days were quite long but they were so fun. We actually ended up having really nice weather for it, it was really lovely and warm. The funny thing is, we came out on the morning in all our thermals… and then ended up sweating through them all because it was so warm and we just hadn't expected it at all.
What do you always have in your dressing room?
Oh I always have to have a snack! I always have to have a snack, usually a sugary snack as well… and a book, I always take a good book with me wherever I go. It's a good combination isn't it!
Who’s the messiest member of the cast?
Ooh, well because of Covid, everyone's been in separate dressing rooms and separated so it's hard to tell. I'll keep an eye out next time I'm there…
Who are you closest to from the cast?
That's a tough one because everyone's been so lovely and welcoming, I think working with Jack [Downham] and Laura [Norton] quite a lot, who play Noah and Kerry, so… I'd say those two.
Who’s your funniest co-star?
You know what, everyone's got such good craic! Laura Norton is really funny, she is brilliant. It's so infectious as well, but she can switch back to being professional so quickly and easily — she's brilliant, she's fab. I feel so lucky I get to work with Laura, she's brilliant.
What’s the best night out or memory you’ve ever had with your co-stars?
When I joined, it has been in Covid so we haven't had that much of a chance. We went out for Halloween and had a little fireworks night thing, which was lovely because it meant I got to meet more of the cast and crew I haven't had the chance to work with yet. So that was really fun!
Which celebrity would you love to see doing a guest role?
Ooh that's such a good question, if it could be anyone, this is such a pipe dream, but if it could be anyone… I'd say Barbra Streisand. Maybe getting her to do a one-off concert in The Woolpack.
If your character could have a romance with anyone in Emmerdale, who would you like it to be?
To be honest, I'm excited to work with anyone and everyone but I'm really enjoying working with Jack, so I'm excited to see where it's going to go with Noah and Chloe…
If you could play another character on the soap, who would it be and why?
I'd love to have played Val [Pollard] when she was there, she was such a fabulous character. Charlie Hardwick was brilliant, I used to love watching her when I was younger. But if we're talking someone current, I'd say… anyone that works in The Woolpack, just because I love working on that set so much. It's a brilliant set, especially when it's all decorated for Christmas.
What’s the strangest or funniest fan encounter you’ve ever had?
You know what, the strangest one was probably the first one I had, just because it was so surreal. I think I'd only had maybe one episode out at that point, so I wasn't expecting to get recognised anytime soon at all. But I was out having a drink with my best friend in Leeds and a man came over to say his girlfriend was a really big Emmerdale fan, would I come over and surprise her, say hello and take a photo.
So I did and they were really, really lovely. But when I got back to my table, me and my friend we literally couldn't believe it. We couldn't stop laughing as it was just so surreal. That early on as well, it was just unbelievable! It's so lovely to get to chat to people as well because Emmerdale has got such great fans and it's so nice to see how much it means to people and how much they enjoy it. It makes me feel very lucky to be a part of something so special.
Do you ever have to go out in disguise to stop people recognising you?
No, it's not quite got to the Hannah Montana stage yet! I don't know if it will to be honest but I enjoy chatting with people who come up and say they watch Emmerdale. It's so nice to see how many people enjoy it and how much it means to them.
If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing? What was your plan B?
When I was really young, before I wanted to be an actor, I used to want to be an author and I've got stacks of books I made maybe when I was like six or seven that are just pieces of paper folded in half with half scribbles on. But once I decided I wanted to be an actress, I never had a concrete plan B, I just always went into it.
What are your plans for Christmas this year?
Eating lots of chocolate, watching lots of Christmas films. Spending time with my family, obviously, we've got a tradition of going out for a Christmasy meal and that's always such a fun night. I can't wait for that, especially as we couldn't do it last year. So we're very excited for that.
