Emmerdale stars whove been replaced on soap – race row, fight and tragic death

10/02/2022

Just like any other job, people join and people leave – and with soaps, this is no different.

But the only difference is the fact that viewers and fans of soaps become rather attached to the actors.

Whether they're in it for years or months, it's easy to become accustomed to a face and familiar-sounding voice.

So when actors move on, get axed or get replaced – it can be a shock to the system.

Like any other soap, Emmerdale isn't immune to these changes and has actually seen it's fair share of recasting.

Not always recast for positive reasons, Daily Star takes a look at a race row, a tragic death and more – all as reasons for recasting.

Ellis Chapman

Ellis Chapman was originally played by Asan N'Jie before Aaron Anthony took over.

The original actor, who first appeared in the Dales back in 2018, was axed from the show when ITV confirmed that they had terminated the his contract with immediate effect in 2019.

It followed an investigation into reports that he and Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas had a fight at London's Hilton Park Lane Hotel, with the pair having to be separated twice.

After Aaron took over in 2019 – the role of Ellis was was soon due to be embroiled in trouble once more, leaving the status of the character hanging in the balance.

Aaron exited the soap this year (2022) after an alleged race row that is said to have taken place on set which involved Matthew Wolfenden and Isabel Hodgins.

Sarah Sugden

Sarah Sugden had a fair amount of actresses take on the role before Katie Hill became a household name playing the young teen.

The most memorable aside from Katie was Sophia Amber Moore who took on the role from 2007 until 2016.

She then left the soap due to being recast when her mum Debbie Dingle returned to Yorkshire from France.

Before being cast as Sarah, Sophia also appeared in Heartbeat and The Royal.

A spokesperson for the show said at the time: "Due to the nature of the storyline, the character of Sarah Sugden has been recast for an older actress.

"The role will now be played by Katie Hill," they told Metro.

Robert Sugden

Ryan Hawley is the most recent actor to take on the role of Robert – but he was in fact the fourth actor to play the role.

With Robert a character in the Dales since 1986, Ryan has been at the helm since 2014 – although his character is banged up at the moment.

The first actor to play the role was Richard Smith, from 1986-1989, before Christopher Smith then took over for 12 years until 2001.

But Christopher was sacked when bosses wanted an older actor, so enlisted Karl Davies who took over until 2005.

Leo Goskirk

Harry Whittaker was a child actor who appeared as Rhona Goskirk and Marlon Dingle's son Leo Goskirk between 2011 and 2014.

Sadly passing away due to a chronic lung infection, Harry died in 2014 – 10 days after his final on-screen appearance in July.

At the time an Emmerdale spokesperson was reported as saying that the cast and crew were "devastated" by the loss of young Harry, who was just three years old at the time.

Actor Mark Charnock, who plays Leo's on-screen father Marlon Dingle, tweeted a tribute to "dearest, loveliest Harry" – and was clearly emotional over the sad news.

Harvey Rogerson took over the role of Leo following Harry's death, and has been at the helm ever since.

Gabby Thomas

Gabby Thomas is the sassy and confidence daughter of Bernice Blackstock and late vicar Ashley Thomas.

She made her first appearance as a baby on Christmas Day in 2001.

Now played by Rosie Bentham, Gabby was originally played by Annelise Manojlovic.

Annelise had a major career U-turn and ended up studying for a Ballet Performance Bachelor of Arts degree at The School of Ballet Theatre UK, according to her profile on Mandy.co.uk.

Rosie took on the role in January 2016, with the actress remaining at the helm of the role ever since.

Since taking on the role Rosie has become a household name and fan favourite.

Rosie has acted many a dramatic scene while portraying Gabby – including the death of her on-screen father and welcoming her first child.

Lucas Taylor

Dawn Taylor’s son was originally portrayed by Dexter Ansell since he popped up in the Dales in 2019.

But Noah Ryan Aspinall took over the part in 2021, after Dexter made his final appearance in the March of that year.

When fans spotted that Lucas had been recast last December, many viewers said they were "doing a double take" after spotting the switch in actor.

"Lucas has had a face, body and personality transplant," penned one at the time.

"WAIT they’ve recast lucas???," said a second.

While a third added: "A Lucas recast. He’s a foot taller and speaks."

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV at 7.30pm
