EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick looks sombre as he films Lolas heartbreaking funeral scenes05/03/2023
EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, who plays grieving widower Jay Brown on the BBC One soap, has been spotted looking very sombre as he took a moment between filming scenes for Lola Pearce's funeral.
It's been a heartbreaking time for the Mitchell family in Albert Square, as Lola, 26, who is played by Danielle Harold, recently discovered her tumour had progressed and her cancer had reached an advanced stage.
The character had been positive for the future up until that point in March, but her hopes were crushed as the doctors advised her she probably only had the rest of the year to live.
Since then, fans' worst fears were apparently confirmed as filming snaps showed a hearse driving through the Walford set with a beautiful floral display spelling out Lola in the back window.
Now Jay star Jamie has been seen filming for Lola's funeral scenes, as he wore a smart grey suit, complete with polished black shoes and a pink patterned tie.
The snaps showed Jamie looking particularly dishevelled, as he grey out his beard and wore his strawberry blonde hair ruffled for the scenes.
The actor also seemed to have sat in the makeup chair prior to his scenes, as he displayed dark marks under his eyes.
As the Jay star took a moment outside the set before going in to carry on filming, Jamie kept his demeanour pensive as he signed an autograph for a waiting fan.
He also had a food bag from local restaurant Sam's in his hand which he took inside with him.
Fans were heartbroken when doctors told Lola she had "six months at best" before the cancer would send her organs into shutdown.
"I'm afraid it's not good news," the character's medical team told her on the phone. "The MRI has detected the tumour rate is advancing again.
"We can talk about starting you on some chemotherapy, but I have to stress, this is purely palliative."
The character, who was introduced as Billy Mitchell's granddaughter in 2011, quickly became a fan-favourite on the square.
Actress Danielle has since shared a snap from one of her upcoming scenes on the soap as she lay in a hospital bed, as she admitted it has been an incredibly tough storyline to portray.
Despite struggling through the emotional plot, the star was proud of her work to raise awareness for brain tumours, and thanked fans for all their support.
"Lola's story has been a very hard one to tell and one that means so much to me and sadly effects so many people," she said on the Instagram caption.
"Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer yet historically only 1 per cent of research is allocated to this devastating disease.
"I would like to take a moment for everybody that has reached out to me and shared their experiences with me, I have read every message And hold all of your messages close to my heart whilst playing this story," the actress continued.
"I have been blessed to meet the most incredible people and work with some wonderful charities along the way and I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for all your support advise and love," she added.
