EastEnders spoilers: Evil Gray uses dead Chantelle to manipulate Whitney Dean

Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) will use late wife Chantelle’s (Jessica Plummer) memory to manipulate Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), in upcoming EastEnders scenes.

Viewers are well aware that the hairdresser died at the hands of her husband last month, as the domestic abuse plot came to a head in harrowing scenes.

Walford residents are still in the dark about how she really died, and the lawyer uses her memory as a way of urging Whitney to speak her truth at her upcoming court trial – following the death of stalker Leo.

Speaking about what viewers can expect, Shona revealed: ‘[Gray] says to her, Chantelle would want you to tell the truth.

‘And it strikes a chord with Whitney and she then thinks about Chantelle, how much she misses her, and what she would say if she was here.

‘Whitney thinks that Chantelle is watching over her on the day of the trial, and she wants to make Chantelle proud. And also, Sonia proud as well.’

Gray chose to back Whitney in court, missing Chantelle’s funeral to do so, but Shona insisted that her character isn’t ‘suspicious’ of his actions.

‘Whitney and Sonia both notice that Gray’s been acting strange since he went to court instead of Chantelle’s funeral,’ she continued. ‘And Sonia says, well he’s just lost his wife – It’s normal to act that way.

‘So Whitney’s definitely not suspicious of anything the audience have seen. I think she just thinks it’s normal, he’s having a really awful time.

‘I think she wants to give him some space.’

Leo died after falling on a knife during a scuffle with Whitney, which came after he stalked her around the square – desperate to get justice for paedophile dad Tony King.

However, she is adamant that she wants to change her plea to guilty – believing it to be ‘karma’ for her previous actions.

‘I think because she’s had enough,’ Shona said. ‘The way Whitney sees it is that Gray and Mick have ruined it and she has no-one else to stand up and fight for her. No-one’s got her back.

‘She’s on her own and she thinks well this is it. It’s karma for all the bad things she’s ever done, she’s going down for it. So she says to Sonia, “I’m changing my plea”.

‘She’s not hanging on for no reason, she thinks she’s going to prison and that’s it, she has to accept it and so does Sonia. It’s quite sad really.

‘I think that Whitney knows that she did it out of self-defence but all she can think is, “I killed a man”.

‘Whitney’s got a tendency to think she’s done something wrong even if she hasn’t because that’s what people have told her all her life. So she just accepts that she’s going to be punished.’

Lifting the lid on how she believes Whitney will fare behind bars – as viewers have seen she struggled to cope previously – Shona insisted she could handle it.

‘I mean, Whitney got hit by a bus and then had it dropped on top of her and survived,’ she added.

‘I think she’d be alright with a few scratches in prison.

‘I think Whitney would try to make the best out of an awful situation and try to use her time to help people.’
