Evil Chris Watts sent a chilling text to his mistress just hours after brutally murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters.

After dumping their bodies, the killer messaged Nichol Kessinger to say his family were "gone".

Still playing the part of the devoted dad, he claimed he had no idea where pregnant Shanann, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste could be.

He let police search his house, and even went on local news to plead for his family's safe return.

But Nichol, who thought Chris was divorced, said he seemed calm and emotionless after claiming they were missing.

The evil dad had strangled his pregnant wife Shanann, killing his unborn son Nico, before smothering his two daughters.

He had buried Shanann in a shallow grave, and hidden the girls' bodies in oil tanks at the site where he worked.

He then pretended to be clueless – but his lies unravelled fast.

Police quickly found out about Chris' affair with Nichol, who he met at work. He had told her he and Shanann were in the process of separating, and later said the divorce was final.

She only learned the truth about Watts' marriage when she saw TV reports on Shanann's disappearance.

Speaking to the Denver Post, Nichol said: "He made me believe that he was doing all of the things that a rational man and good father would do."

She added: "He's a liar. He lied about everything."

Watts eventually confessed to the murders, initially making the vile claim that he had killed Shanann after she smothered their two daughters herself.

But after months of blaming his innocent wife, Chris finally admitted that he was the one who killed his children.

He is serving multiple life sentences for the murders of his family, and will never be released from prison.

He only escaped the death penalty at the request of Shanann's family, who said they didn't want anyone else to die.
