BBC’s Dan Walker angered football icon Pele after asking him not to sign bag

BBC Breakfast anchor Dan Walker has revealed that he once prevented footballing icon, Pelé, from signing something when they met.

The startling revelation was made while Dan was appearing alongside Rob Brydon, David Mitchell and Lee Mack on the hit show Would I Lie To You?

When the Home Truths round came around, the panellists had to read out a fact about themselves, leaving the opposition to guess whether the revelation was false, or in fact, true.

Dan, 43, revealed that while the Brazilian icon was signing a piece of memorabilia, he abruptly halted him – leaving the former forward startled.

After hearing the shocking claims, Lee asked: "If he started, is it not better to finish then to just have 'Pe'?"

However, Dan explained the situation, saying: "I had taken a Brazil shirt with me, so I gave it to the great man and he signed the shirt, full signature on the shirt.

"I took the shirt and turned to put it on the normal bag that I brought with me and then when I turned back, the great man had the bag he'd picked up and without thinking, I said, 'Not the bag, Pelé!'"

Recalling the incident, Dan revealed that Pelé, whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was left feeling somewhat confused.

"He sort of stared at me angrily, and then he said, 'No one has ever asked me not to sign anything before'," Dan confessed.

Dan joked that he didn't want his kit bag signed as he liked that particular one.

A second tweeted: " I don't know whether to applaud you for having the balls to say no to Pele or be furious you did that to him at all."

"@mrdanwalker Pele? You maniac… I can't believe it, I literally can't believe it…" exclaimed a third.

BBC News icon Gordon Burns tweeted Dan, penning: "@mrdanwalker your Pele story on the brilliant funniest show on TV #WILTY was astonishing and an absolute classic. Loved it. Can't believe u stopped Pele signing your sports bag cos it would ruin it! Can only think u believed he was going to sign his full name! But…even then… [sic]"

Shortly after the moment aired on tele, Dan took to his Twitter account to reveal his "life low point" as he shared a snap of the signed Brazil shirt by Pelé, which proudly sits on the wall of his Sheffield home.
