BBC Breakfast viewers are convinced they have figured out who is set to replace Dan Walker – and they're VERY familiar.

Dan, 45, announced he was leaving his regular morning slot on the BBC to become a lead anchor on Channel 5's news programme.

Now, fans think they have worked out who will replace him – and it's someone who is very familiar to fans of BBC Breakfast.

While Dan has most often been replaced by Jon Kay or his co-host Sally Nugent – but a more major shake-up could be in store.

Many have taken to Twitter to air their suspicions, suggesting that weather woman Carol Kirkwood could be the perfect choice.

"Not sure we’ve had a weather presenter take the sofa? This opens up bringing the mighty Carol Kirkwood in," one said.

A second chimed in: "Opportunity for a shake up! Like, have a woman sit on the left side of the screen?"

Someone else suggested that Welsh journalist and broadcast Owain Wyn-Evans could also take over from Dan.

"I wonder if BBC will go with Owain Wyn-Evans for BBC Breakfast job… definitely been grooming him for a big job," one wrote.

Another echoed: "Dan's replacement is obvious. Who else can entertain the audience like Owain can?"

It comes after Dan took to Twitter to explain his "tough decision" to leave the BBC and jump ship to another channel after signing a £1.5million deal.

In a series of tweets, Dan wrote: “It is often the case that the simple truth is much duller than all the made-up ‘moles’ and so-called ‘sources' claim.

"In a nutshell… a bloke with a really good job, which he loved, got offered a really good job somewhere else which provided an amazing new challenge…

"… and the chance to make some exciting TV. The bloke explained to his current employers that, even though it was a tough decision, he had decided to leave.

"They are now trying their best to allow him to make a dignified departure."

Dan announced he quit his role as BBC Breakfast anchor after six years last week.
