Taylor Swift's Retro Christmas Songs Swifties Still Have on Repeat12/10/2020
Taylor Swift is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. She’s written multiple hit songs and found success in various genres. Years before Folklore or Lover, the 30-year-old released a six-track Christmas album (technically, an EP).
The Christmas album became available just a year after the release of her self-titled debut studio album featuring “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar”. Even though more than a decade has passed, Swift fans aka Swifties, are still listening to Swift’s Christmas songs.
Taylor Swift covered popular holiday songs on a 2007 album
Before Swift crossed over from country to pop she released a handful of holiday songs. The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, originally titled Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection debuted in 2007, according to Billboard.
Initially sold exclusively in Target stores, the album featured Swift singing her own renditions of four popular holiday songs. The first track is her cover of the 1985 Wham! song, “Last Christmas.”
“Last Christmas” is followed up by Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” and the classic Christmas carol “Silent Night.” Swift’s rendition of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” the top-selling Christmas song of all time, rounds out the track list.
She included 2 original songs on ‘The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection’
The Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter didn’t release a handful of Christmas covers without including a few of her own original songs. Mixed in with her versions of other popular Christmas songs are two songs Swift wrote.
She is credited as the co-writer on “Christmases When You Were Mine” where she sings about missing an ex-boyfriend during the holiday season. “Christmas Must Be Something More” is her second original song on the album, written by Swift alone, in which she examines the true meaning of Christmas.
Taylor Swift’s Christmas album wasn’t well-received by critics
Possibly part of the reason why Swift has yet to release another Christmas album is that her first didn’t go over so well with critics. Rolling Stone and Vulture both have tracks from The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection ranking low out of Swift’s entire catalog of songs.
Based on reviews, “Last Christmas” and “Christmases When You Were Mine” seem to be the album’s strongest tracks. Overall, critics felt the album seemed rushed. And on top of that, the album was called out for poor song selection. Critics aside, Swifties are still listening to the songs.
Swift surprised fans with a Christmas song in 2019
12 years after the release of her Christmas album Swift released an original Christmas song. She debuted “Christmas Tree Farm” in late 2019 after writing and recording the song in 24 hours.
Swift grew up on an actual Christmas tree farm and wrote a song about her holiday experience as a kid. She made the single even more personal by using clips of her as a kid in the music video.
