Johnny Depp’s fans have celebrated the verdict of the libel trial in which the Hollywood star sued his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard for defamation.

The 58-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star sued Amber, 36, for $50million (£40m), claiming that her op-ed for the Washington Post about domestic violence was about him, despite it not directly naming him.

The jury reached a unanimous decision in Depp’s favour, agreeing with his claim that Amber’s article had defamed him.

They decided the statement was false, defamatory and said with malice and the actor was awarded $15million (£12m) in damages.

Taking to Twitter, fans of the award-winning actor triumphantly celebrated the jury’s verdict.

One tweeted: “Justice was served. Amber Heard lied and lied, and the jury saw that. Uncancel johnny depp.”

Another added: “JOHNNY DEPP WINS LETS GOOOOO.”

A third fan was rejoicing, writing: “The majority of the members of the jury agreed that Amber Heard defamed Johnny Depp on ALL THREE counts that he filed for.

“I’m soo happy for this Man. He got to speak the truth and succeed at it.”

Among the celebrities who commented on the verdict was Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who wrote on Twitter: “Depp wins and gets Heard immunity.”

Johnny Depp has since thanked the jury for @giving his life back’ after they awarded in his favour after the six week libel trial”.

In his statement, issued through his spokesperson, Mr Depp said: “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed.

“All in the blink of an eye.

“False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me.

“It had already travelled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.

“And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

Johnny and Amber were married in February 2015 before the actress filed for divorce in May 2016.
