Il Divo singer Carlos Marin has died from Covid at the age of 53 after being placed into an induced coma earlier this week.

He originally fell ill on December 7 and was later placed into a medically induced coma in Manchester Royal Hospital after being admitted on December 8.

His group Il Divo shared the tragic news on social media on December 18, writing: "It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away.

"He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There will never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.

"For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend.

"We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs."

Marin had been part of Il Divo since the group started in 2003, with the group going on to sell more than 30 million copies of their album globally.

The group had been due to perform in Lisbon, Portugal and La Coruña Spain, but announced a delay to all their shows until 2022 due to a band "illness" but gave no further information.

They wrote in a statement: "Unfortunately, due to illness, the remaining dates for Il Divo’s December 2021 UK tour have been postponed until December 2022.

"Il Divo are deeply sorry to their fans, but look forward to returning to the road in the new year and seeing you all in the run up to next Christmas."

Marin had posted a picture on Instagram only on December 6 with his bandmates David Miller, Sébastien Izambard and Urs Bühler.

He was then admitted to hospital in a serious condition after falling ill with Covid but his organs were said to be stable.

Fans have rushed to share their devastation after the band's announcement, with one writing: "Wow can't believe it. Such terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are with all his friends and family."

Another added: "What devastating news! Carlos was such a huge character, his voice magnificent and so key to many of Il Divo's amazing songs. My sincere condolences to you all. May he rest in peace."
