GMBs Kate Garraway learning new way of life in intense Derek Covid battle

Kate Garraway has said her husband Derek Draper's situation is "still pretty active" after his length Covid battle.

Derek, 54, spent more than a year in hospital battling the coronavirus but he was released from hospital earlier this year and went home to Good Morning Britain star Kate and their two children.

Sharing an update with PA, the presenter said the family were now "learning the new way to live our lives and what he needs next to help him forward".

The TVstar also said there was "a lot of intensity" as she navigated family life.

Kate opened up as she discussed her appearance on Walking With…, a new BBC Two series about walking.

The TV star took a stroll through the Cotswolds in her episode and said it was the first time that she had been alone since Derek got ill in March 2020.

She said heading off for a walk by herself was a real "indulgence" and that it "rejuvenated" her.

Derek needs round the clock care since his Covid battle but Kate recently said she is hoping to get him back to Chorley to see his mum and dad this Christmas.

She told Woman's Own: "The dream would be to get Derek to Chorley [with the Drapers]. At the moment, moving him is a big problem: it's exhausting for him.

"If not, maybe the Drapers could come to us for a big gathering, Covid permitting.”

The presenter – who shares son Billy and daughter Darcey with Derek – said she knows this year will not be the same as other Christmases but that she's just so happy to have her husband home.

She said he wouldn't be going Christmas shopping or dressing as Santa this year, but added: "None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it's adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he's here at all, which we didn't have at all last year and feared would never happen."
