A woman whose video of her proposing to her boyfriend went viral has revealed she’s horrific trolling online – with other women telling her they’d ‘rather die’ than pop the question to a man.

Sukhmin Garcha, 27, a skin educator, proposed to her partner, Shiraz Brar, 27, a dental hygienist, who both live in Vancouver, Canada in July.

But after a video capturing the twist on typical gender roles went viral, Sukhmin says she was trolled by women telling her she had no self respect, she should be embarrassed and that her partner didn’t look happy about her proposing to him.

The video did receive plenty of love from the male viewers but Sukhmin was surprised to see so much negativity from women.

With comments such as people asking if her knee was hurting, she’s losing and that they would rather hoover the ocean than propose to a man, Sukhmin was determined to pave the way and propose to her lover.

Sukhmin said: ‘I was always open to proposing. I was pretty nervous about it at first. I wanted to find the right moment to do it.

‘It didn’t cause any issues personally. My boyfriend had the biggest smile on his face. Our families were really supportive and happy about it. My mom was really proud.

‘Honestly, I would say just do it! If the both of you are on the same level of investment in the relationship, it’s a no brainier.

Despite other people telling her they would ‘rather die’ than propose to their partner, Sukhmin said she and her family ‘loved it’

‘Just because not a lot of people haven’t done it, doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

‘These are just outdated gender roles made by the society, We’re the new generation and we can definitely build a new society where gender roles don’t exist.

‘My friends and family loved it. I received some hate on TikTok though but very little compared to the positive comments.

‘I received plenty of negative comments. A lot of them were ‘ I would rather die’ or ‘ she has no self-respect, ‘ He doesn’t look happy’ and the list goes on.

‘A lot of the hate came from females which was very surprising. It was interesting to see how men supported woman proposing.

‘In our society we always want equality but because of cultural bias there is always resistance.

‘I genuinely believe we need to break through these norms and live life to its full potential.

‘In a world where there is so much negativity, we should opt to spread kindness and love.’
