What is an angel shot? Bartender explains code to use if you don't feel safe07/26/2021
It would be great if we lived in a world in which people didn’t have to rely on things like secret bar codes to feel safe in public, but sadly, that’s just not the case.
While we wait for that dream to become a reality, it’s worth remembering the ‘angel shot’ code that you can use in a bar or pub to subtly signal to staff that you don’t feel safe and you need some help.
TikTokker and bartender Benji Spears shared the code in a video that has, at the time of writing, been viewed 8.6 million times.
In his video, Benji explains that there are three ways you can ‘order’ an angel shot to let bar staff know exactly what kind of help you need.
The first is an angel shot with lime, which lets staff know you’d like them to call the police.
An angel shot neat means you’d like someone to walk you to your car because you’re not feeling safe enough to leave alone.

And an angel shot on the rocks means you’d like someone to call you a taxi.
‘I think this is a great learning lesson. Everyone should know about the angel shot,’ Benji said in the clip.
‘It’s just a great way to make sure that we all feel safe.’
It’s worth noting that, even though this isn’t a new code and Benji’s TikTok has been liked by 2.4 million people, there’s always a chance you might not be able to order an angel shot at your local and have them know exactly what you mean.
If you ask whether they do angel shots and you’re met with confusion, you can also try asking for Angela, which serves as another signal to staff that you feel unsafe and need assistance.
The Ask For Angela campaign started in Lincolnshire in 2016, but by 2018 it was adopted across the capital.
The Met backed the campaign, making posters explaining the code word in toilets in pubs, clubs and at festivals.
