Errors in 20% of products tested isn’t a few honest mistakes but a systemic fiddle by a food industry tricking customers, potentially damaging health and in some cases flouting religious observance.
Tory austerity weakening local Trading Standards teams doesn’t help and is part of the problem when reckless food producers and retailers gamble they will never be caught.
Six years after the horsemeat scandal the widespread mislabelling of foods is intolerable and it’s time to get tough, testing extensively with the guilty clobbered with heavy fines and the worst offenders put out of business.
When we’re sold beef, pork, lamb or chicken we’re entitled to expect it to be beef, pork, lamb or chicken instead of a blind gamble.
