The Real Reason Joe Biden’s Dogs Are No Longer At The White House

03/09/2021

One of the best parts of the Joe Biden presidency to date has been the addition of the Bidens’ gorgeous German Shepherds to the White House, Champ and Major. We cooed when the dogs made their appearance a few days after their hoomans arrived, and we sighed when we watched (and heard) the dogs keeping a watchful eye on the Oval Office as President Joe Biden went about his business. So we can be forgiven for being more than a bit crushed to find out that Champ and Major were sent back to Wilmington, Delaware last week, over what CNN reports was a “biting incident.”

The problem didn’t involve the stately 13-year-old Champ, but active 3-year old Major, who CNN notes has displayed what it described as “agitated behavior,” which included jumping, barking, and charging. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has even admitted that the dogs are having to adjust. “I’ve been getting obsessed with getting our dogs settled because we have an old dog and we have a very young dog. They have to take the elevator, they’re not used to that, and they have to go out on the South Lawn with lots of people watching them. So that’s what I’ve been obsessed with, getting everybody settled and calm,” Dr. Jill told Kelly Clarkson during her first solo interview since moving into the White House.

Champ and Major's departure from the White House is not permanent

The German Shepherder says this breed is very intelligent, and biting and aggression can be seen when a dog is either confused or responding to some kind of external stimuli. German Shepherds are also known to be loyal dogs, but that loyalty is bestowed on only a few — we imagine President Joe and First Lady Dr. Jill are on that exclusive list.

Social media has risen up in defense of Major Biden, many of whom may not have met him but are convinced that he is a Very Good Boi. “You know the White House is back to having normalcy when Major Biden and Champ Biden being sent home for being protective dogs is used as a juicy story to drum up drama. That’s pathetic,” noted one Twitter user.  Another one tweeted, “Tell me why Major Biden was held to a higher standard than the last President was in terms of aggressive behavior.”

In an update, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said (via Twitter), “I don’t have any updates on reports about an incident but what I can tell you … is that Major and Champ are part of the Bidens’ family. They often go to Delaware when the first lady is traveling. And they’re adjusting to their new home.”

With Dr. Jill expected home on Wednesday night after a three-day trip, the dogs are expected to return, too (via Twitter).
