Sleep experts share tips on how to sleep if full moon is affecting your rest


The last Supermoon of the year will light up the night sky tonight – and your sleep might get compromised.

June 2021's full moon is set to be a Strawberry Supermoon, and it's going to be spectacular.

Because of its low path in the sky, it will give off a gorgeous orange tint – but it might affect your sleep cycle.

A study by online blinds retailer 247 Blinds has found that 43% of Gen Z (16 to 24 year olds) believe the full moon causes sleep disruption.

Discussing the impact of the moon on our sleep, chartered psychologist and sleep expert at Trouble Sleeping Dr Lindsay Browning, said: "Generally, research suggests that we do not get as good quality sleep, or sleep for as long around the full moon.

"Scientists state the bright light from the moon may disrupt melatonin production, making sleep harder"

Here are some expert tips on how to sleep when there is a full moon.

Eliminate any creeping light

To get an optimal night's rest it's advised to sleep in a room which is as dark as possible.

Jason Peterkin, director at 247 Blinds said: "Blackout blinds are a brilliant addition to help you achieve an ideal night’s sleep.

"The thick fabric will not only help to regulate the temperature of the house, but also ensure you get a better night’s sleep during the brighter evenings.”

Reduce room temperature

According to electric heating and innovators Rointe, 18.5C is the ideal bedroom temperature for a comfortable night's sleep.

If you struggle to sleep during warmer evenings, consider opening the windows upstairs, or on the same level as your bedroom, as well as internal doors a few hours before bed.

This will allow air to circulate.

Reduce the light in your surroundings

Bright light, such as from phones and tablets, can suppress melatonin production, which is why it's important to dim lights before bedtime.

Dr Lindsay Browning said: “If the moon is full ensure that you have night mode set on your electronic devices to reduce some of the high frequency blue light that they emit, which also disrupts melatonin production in turn, disrupts your sleep.”

Consider swapping sheets

Cotton sheets will provide an ideal sleep solution, so you could try switching to pure cotton bedding.

Lucy Ackroyd, Head of Design at Christy said: “Cotton has unique natural qualities that make it highly breathable. It also has moisture wicking properties that prevent humidity build-up, making you much more comfortable on those balmy nights."

Ensure your mattress is right for you

There are a number of mattresses which help to regulate your body temperature.

To keep cool, you'll want to consider mattresses with a high content of natural fillings such as wool, cotton or bamboo.
