Princess Diana’s gym jumper worn to every fitness class sells for incredible sum07/11/2019
The famous Virgin Atlantic sweatshirt worn by Princess Diana three times a week to her fitness classes has been sold for £42,660.
The jumper fetched more than ten times its reserve when it went up for auction on Wednesday night.
The dark blue pullover, adorned with Virgin Atlantic’s classic Varga Girl advertising logo, was sold by the Boston-based RR Auction house.
The item was bought by a mystery buyer from California, who paid $53,532 amid a frenzy of bids.
The late royal’s personal trainer, Jenni Rivett, who placed the item up for sale, said: “She always wore the same sweatshirt when we met to work out.
“She was tired of the media speculating about her clothes when there were more important things happening in the world.”
South Africa-born Rivett, who was given the jumper by Princess Diana in 1997, decided to sell it for charity.
She says proceeds will help a little Malawian girl go to school.
“The princess would definitely approve if she were still alive,” says Rivett. “Causes in Africa were always very close to her heart.”
