Princess Anne: Expert discusses royal’s ceremonies

Princess Anne is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Phillip, 99. While in the Royal Family, she has represented the monarch at various official events.

The Princess Royal is often considered one of the hardest working family members as she has made regular appearances during the last 50 years.

Her older brother Prince Charles is first in line to the throne and also works as a senior working royal.

Princess Anne has been spotted out many times with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Before Princess Anne married, she had a brief romance with Andrew Parker Bowles.

Years later, Andrew went on to marry Camilla and the couple were wed for 22 years before they divorced.

While Princess Anne and Camilla share an ex, body language expert Judi James claimed there is no tension and they appear to get on well.

Judi said: “Senior royals do seem to have closed ranks around the Queen recently, creating an elite squad of Charles, Camilla and Anne, Kate and William and Edward and Sophie.

“Given their past histories, with Anne having dated Camilla’s ex husband, the relationship between Anne and Camilla might have been difficult.

“But in fact the two women seem very tolerant of one another to the point of often looking like old friends.”

Camilla and Princess Anne have been seen less often together this year due to coronavirus restrictions.

In December 2019, they chatted while at the Royal Family Christmas Day church service.

Commenting on pictures from the service Judi explained they showed signs of friendship.

She added: “As Princess Anne walked up to the church entrance she went to join Camilla, who had clearly spotted the fact that they had both opted to wear matching, eye-catching purple outfits.

“Camilla pointed this out with a fun, elbowing gesture aimed at Anne and the two women laughed together.”

She claimed this was particularly noteworthy as Princess Anne does not always show that side of her while in public.

“With any other royal but Anne this might have been unimportant,” the expert continued.

“But the Queen’s daughter is a woman who has often appeared to keep a polite and sometimes frosty-looking distance from some of the royal wives and this signal of what looked like easy-going friendship and shared fun with Camilla, who can often appear tense and rather anxious in public, did seem like a first.”

When they have been seen chatting in public, the royals seem happy to see each other.

Judi stated: “Even their touch rituals in public are telling. One meeting at a racecourse shows both women wearing what look like delighted smiles and eye contact and Anne has extended one hand palm-up, which Camilla has then placed her own hand over in a sign of affection.

“The affection isn’t one-sided either, Anne’s fingers are curled up around Camilla’s thumb in a reciprocal gesture.”
