DEAR DEIDRE: MY cousin is emotionally draining the life out of me. She puts me down and everyone else around us.
I always feel so low after seeing her.

When I have recovered and I can face talking to her again, she destroys me all over again.
I am a single 46-year-old female. My cousin is 48. I have tried to explain to her numerous times that her moaning brings me down.
But she just argues and criticises everything I say or do. She is obsessed with death and her whole conversation centres around who is sick and going to die. I have had enough.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your cousin is probably unhappy with her own life and puts you down because of her own self-esteem issues.
You cannot change her, the only thing you can change is how you react to her.
When she gets too much, you do have a choice – you can take longer breaks or even decide to take a complete break.
Remember, you don’t have to spend time with her. It is up to you who you socialise with.
Fill your life with people who make you happy and appreciate you.
