Mum’s agony after her dead son, 32, was ‘padlocked’ inside flat for weeks06/24/2019
A grieving mum is fighting for justice after the council accidentally padlocked her dead son inside his flat for weeks.
Michael Stewart, 32, was found dead inside his flat in Torry, Aberdeen, on March 8 this year after police were contacted over concerns for his wellbeing.
When officers arrived at the property, they broke down the padlocked door to find Mr Stewart's body inside – confirming it was evident he had been dead for some weeks.
Aberdeen City Council have since confirmed the door had been locked in February, with Mr Stewart still inside.
His heartbroken mum Jane Grant from Yorkshire says she has already been turned away by more than 20 solicitors, but is willing to pursue “every possible option” in getting justice for her son.
She said: “Everybody has this idea that when you put in a claim against anybody, it’s solely to do with money.
“The council has quite openly said it was their mistake for not checking inside while my son was padlocked inside for months.
This claim is not all about money, it’s about justice for my son.
“I’m not eating properly, I’m not sleeping properly, my day-to-day life is now all about Michael.
“They updated the policy after all of this, and that will hopefully prevent this happening to anybody else – but if that policy had been in place at the time, I would have found my son in February, instead of all the way into March.”
Aberdeen City Council carried out a review of its procedures in securing its properties, and confirmed that the door had been locked in February, with Mr Stewart still inside.
At the time, a spokesman said: “We are committed to updating our procedures in relation to securing properties that are believed to be vacant.”
There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances regarding the father-of-one’s death.
Speaking after his body was found, a friend described Mr Stewart as a “really lovely, likeable guy” with a “brilliant sense of humour”.
He added: “It’s tragic that somebody could have lain there for that period of time without being discovered – surely to God there should have been something in place to check on him. He didn’t deserve this, nobody deserves this.”
