Express.co.uk spoke to Scott Medwatz, make-up expert and brand ambassador for Chantecaille, about what to avoid and use when it comes to achieving a youthful look. The right products, used in the right way, can make a face look a lot younger.
For one’s base layer, Scott warned against using powder, advising opting for a creamy foundation instead.
He said: “For those who prefer fuller-coverage foundation, working with a gel-cream foundation rather than powder gives the skin a more youthful appearance.
“Powders tend to crease and settle into fine lines, which can accentuate skin texture, which changes with age. I love using Chantecaille’s Future Skin Foundation or Future Skin Cushion Skincare Foundation on older skin because it leaves the skin looking fresh and flawless, and it feels and looks natural.
“For bronzer and blush, I love using Chantecaille’s gel-cream versions, Radiance Gel Bronzer and Cheek Gelée, in lieu of powders. They look natural on the skin and last throughout the day.
“The application is also so simple, and anyone can master using these products.
“By avoiding powders, you can control the product better, blend seamlessly into the skin, and leave the skin looking dewy, smooth, and plump — three things that older skin sometimes naturally lacks.”
Any brand’s creamy foundation can work instead of powder, such as Charlotte Tilbury or MAC.
Charlotte Tilbury is a good option for mature skin – its Beautiful Skin foundation is a good option for those looking for an everyday base, while the Airbrush Flawless foundation is ideal for an evening out. The latter has a full-coverage formula and a luminous finish.
As for eye make-up, Scott advised against using too much eyeliner, saying: “Heavy eyeliner and overlining the eyes can make the eye appear smaller and sometimes heavier.
“For a more youthful look and depending on the eye shape, I always encourage women to pick lining either the top or bottom lashline.
“Using a creamy eyeliner on the top not only allows for more control but also makes it easy to diffuse the look, keeping it soft yet defined.”
Scott advised looking for an eyeliner pencil with an “aloe infused pencil” as “the eye will instantly look brighter, bigger, and more awake.”
Looking after one’s skin is essential and should be part of everyone’s daily routine, according to Scott. Make-up will also appear smoother on good skin.
Scott continued: “No matter what, if the skin is not properly prepped before make-up application, the final result will not last a full day’s wear or look seamless, smooth, or flawless.
“Finding a suitable moisturizer is essential to having your make-up blend into the skin flawlessly and last throughout the day.”
“Chantecaille’s 24K Gold Firming Moisturizer is not only my choice when prepping mature skin, but has been the choice of top celebrity makeup artists on red carpets around the world,” he claimed.
“It is an energizing and hydrating moisturizer that is boosted with pure gold and peptides to help reduce the appearance of lines and give a youthful glow to the skin. It is the ideal base for flawless make-up because it delivers the perfect amount of moisture to the skin throughout the day and leaves the skin plump and glowing.”
Another good moisturiser for mature skin is the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream from Elemis.
It’s formulated with potent plant actives, which means it boosts hydration and improves the elasticity and firmness of the skin over time. Its texture is also ideal as it is light and creamy.
Meder Beauty’s Circa-Night Cream is another product that addresses skin elasticity, as well as skin sensitivity.
For just £17, Olay has a good night moisturiser too – the Regenerist Retinol24 Night Face Moisturiser With Retinol & Vitamin B3 contains a blend of skin-smoothing retinol, moisture-retaining B3, and a skin-brightening finish.
