I moved abroad for dream life with my husband and now feel trapped and lonely11/27/2020
DEAR DEIDRE: DESPITE living in idyllic surroundings with my husband, I feel trapped and pointless.
I am 41 and he is 43. He was working as a buyer for a big supermarket chain when a company in the South of France asked him to take over their exporting side.

It seemed a wonderful offer so we moved with our two boys, then aged nine and 11.
They settled quickly, love it here and are now fluent in French.
My husband loves it too. But he mostly works from home now and is under my feet all the time.
I miss my job and cannot get another as I don’t speak French, though I have tried to learn.
I have no confidence socialising so have made few friends here.
Since Covid arrived, my husband’s job feels insecure and our finances are stretched to the limit already.
I saw an advert for my old job in the UK the other day and I was tempted to apply.
I was married before and had no independence and my only money was what my ex gave me.
I feel I’m in that position again now and I hate it.
DEIDRE SAYS: Share these feelings with your husband.
Do not blame him, as you also thought this would be a good move, but the pandemic has been a real handicap to creating a new life.
If you talk even broken French, local people will love you for it, and it is only by battling on that you will become more fluent.
Once Covid restrictions are lifted, join a language class and something like yoga.
Ask around and I bet there is an expat group, too.
Working online from home means you could hold down a UK job from over there, so get applying.
This can yet all turn around.
