I don't know how to tell my brother his pet died when I was looking after it

DEAR DEIDRE: MY brother’s hamster has died and I am terrified of telling him.

He asked me to look after this hamster when he got a job in London.

I was happy to help but it died three weeks ago.

My brother will be home soon for Christmas and I am dreading it.

I am a boy of 15 and my brother is 19.

He loved this little animal and will be gutted.

Should I just come clean or try to replace it? I am so worried.

DEIDRE SAYS: Hamsters are short-lived and the joy of owning pets goes hand in hand with the heartbreak of losing them – through old age, illness or an accident.

Don’t try to replace it. I expect your brother would instantly know and be angry you lied.

Tell him what happened before he comes home and offer your sympathy.

If he struggles, suggest he contact the Blue Cross pet bereavement service (bluecross.org.uk, 0800 096 6606).
