The bidding site, eBay, is constantly updated with treasures available to buy and rare coins are often among the items on sale. Although a lot of these coins are given a reasonable price, some coins go for much more than face value. Recently, a Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit 50p coin from 2017 was selling for an astounding £2000. The coin was described as rare, but bidders must beware before parting with their cash.

The fifty pence piece was uploaded by the seller “acerbrien” along with two snaps of the coin.

In the post, they wrote: “The Tale of Peter Rabbit 2017 Issue – Beatrix Potter 50p Piece Coin Rare.”

On top of the whopping selling price, potential buyers would also need to pay an extra £1.50 for postage.

The seller explained the coin would be delivered by First Class Large Letter and no returns would be accepted.

Beatrix Potter 50p coins were first released in 2016 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the author’s birth.

The coins featured classic characters from her children’s books and they proved so popular new versions of the coins have been released each year since.

The Peter Rabbit 50p coin on offer was part of the 2017 batch of commemorative coins and – although these are popular – they are not necessarily worth a lot of money.

According to the coin website, Change Checker, the Peter Rabbit 50p has a huge mintage of 19,300,000.

It is also ranked as “one” on the scarcity index, which means it is actually common.

What’s more, the coin publication, Spend It? Save It? What Should You Do? have given the coin a valuation of £4 – a far cry from the asking price.

The coin was also available on the Royal Mint website for just £10, although it is now sold out.

By shopping around, coin enthusiasts could find themselves a better deal and save more money.

Another Tale of Peter Rabbit coin was put on sale for £5000, despite only being worth a few pounds.

A Beatrix Potter coin was recently uploaded for the eye-watering price of £8999.

Despite being described as “rare” and in “good condition” it was also worth just £4.
