Actress and model Kelly Brook recently admitted her sex life is better than ever – and she credits both her age and her newfound healthy lifestyle.
‘Sex is better with age and, yes, also when you are feeling healthier as you are feeling more confident in your body,’ she told The Sun.
‘If I am training and I am eating well I definitely feel sexier.’
She adds that the benefits of working out and eating nutritious foods can bleed into all areas of your life and, of course, sex is not exempt from that.
It turns out, she’s right.
‘Working out can definitely boost libido,’ Gigi Engle, an ACS certified sexologist, tells Metro.co.uk.
‘When we’re healthier, we tend to see improvement in all areas of functioning – from work, to sleep, to sex. We feel better when we’re taking care of our bodies.’
One 2018 study found that people who maintain a gym routine have a higher desire for sex while an earlier study showed that there’s a positive correlation between exercise and better sexual function.
So, what’s the correlation between exercise (ultimate pain) and sex (ultimate pleasure)? According to Gigi, it’s both hormonal and mental.
‘Exercise releases feel-good chemicals in the brain such as dopamine and serotonin, all important elements in sexual libido,’ she explains.
‘Plus, when you’re working out regularly you’re more likely to feel good about your body, which can be a big motivator to get naked.’
If you’re someone who works out, you’ll know that even sticking to a healthier lifestyle for just a few days can make you feel a million times more confident, and that’s before you’ve seen any physical changes, so it’s no surprise that that cocktail of endorphins and confidence can lead to a better sex life.
If this has given you motivation to put on your gym kit and move your body, then, good, go for it! But be sure not to overtrain, as it could have the opposite effect.
‘Exercise would decrease libido if you’re training really hard and exhausting yourself significantly, where you don’t have energy for anything else,’ says Gigi.
Remember, sex itself takes a little bit of physical effort, so you need to keep some energy in the tank if you want to improve your sex life.
‘Exercise can also be a hindrance if you’re injuring yourself or overworking your muscles where you’re fatigued or in pain for days after training,’ Gigi adds.
‘It’s very important to train safely and listen to your body. Everything in moderation.’
